Bye Bye WRKS

As for AM 1050, when it goes ESPN Deportes, will it keep the WEPN calls or switch to something like WEND or WEPD? Both seem to be available for AM although the former is on a Clear Channel FM in North Carolina :)

As of today, the WRKS callsign that has been on 98.7 for many years moves to a Mississippi station. ironically, it's also an ESPN Radio station on FM.

That station is now the former WZNO Pickens, serving the Jackson, Mississippi area at 105.9FM.

It is also owned by Urban Radio II, L.L.C. - the debtor-in-possession of the ICBC Radio stations. It looks like the company is putting some of that $10 million intellectual property investment to good use.

Considering the format of the New York station which the WRKS call-sign used to adorn, the market it has been relocated to is an appropriate choice by the company. ICBC does own and operate two Urban Contemporary FMs within the Jackson market which they could have placed the call-sign on, however, their call-signs are closely identified with the branding on each of those stations.

@Dani: Even though it will be a different format, they'd be better off just keeping the WEPN (AM) calls on 1050, IMHO. For all intents and purposes, it'll still be an ESPN format.

Still think that they could of put it on a better signal one of the strongest in the city and still keep the AM signal for areas like Sussex County

You mean, like, 97.1? Leading Hot 97 to "merge" with Power 105.1, and all of the hip-hoppers live happily ever after? ::)

Maybe this situation might actually lead ESPN to actually buy an AM station (620?) in the long run...

If Emmis has to sell 97.1, I could see them selling its intellectual property to Clear Channel to use on Power 105.1. It seems like Hot 97 is an "institution" in NYC, and many people would cry foul if it flips. Its so popular that rappers mention it in their songs.
