Bye Bye Zone

Just a quick note: the stereo pilot for WZNN has been turned back ON.Now, you can hear the Hawaiian music in glorious stereo! :D

The squeeze play idea like they did with kiss & jamz is exactly what I had in mind. I know WZZK is already winning the country battle but they could possibly be able to take the Bull down completely that way and prevent future country competition from moving in down the road. I think classic country would bill well too so it wouldn't be a waist.

The most talked about radio station in Montgomery right now is The Possum - Classuc Country. Flanking move to protect WBAM. Amazing how big the response is. Smart to protect ZZK.

::)I wish they would hurry up and get the Hawaiian jiberish off the air, and give us our new format, for cryin out loud! My gut feeling is though, 97.3 will be the return of an oldies format in Birmingham! Birmingham needs a good oldies station, because every time WYDE or someone tried to fill that nitch, some Obama basher takes it over! The bull would be a great news talk station name.lol. The name of the new 97.3 should be, the Groove! Just please, take the Hawaiian jibberish off the air, it makes my skin crawl! Just sayin!

Now for some thoughts concerning those ideas:

1. Now for those who say go Classic Country and protect WZZK is a great idea but I just don't see it happening.
2. Now for those who say go Hot AC, I don't see it happening.
3. Now for those who say take it Rock, that's a great idea but I still don't see it happening.
4. Great idea for Oldies music but I just don't see it working on a full powered FM station, unless you did something like WHPH in Clanton.

This is what I see happening.

5. WAGG Urban Inspirational Gospel.

Why you ask, this format would stand the best chance of making it and besides there's a market for this presentation.  Hallelujah 105.5 FM was doing very well.  True the ads weren't there but the audience was.  I believe Mr. Dubose and company would have no trouble selling this format, on FM, if they did it right.

And once they did that, then turn AM 610 into an Oldies/Timeless Classics station and fish for a relay on the FM side.  Market this station as a FM one and have some fun with it.  Do something like WNZZ AM 950 in Montgomery and use these calls if you could: WBTC (We're Birmingham's Timeless Classics)

According to the Birmingham News article, Dubose said that 97.3's new format had not yet been determined. Although it seems to me that moving WAGG to 97.3 would be Summit Media's best bet given how poorly WZNN has done with various formats over the years, if their plans were to simply move WAGG's programming to 97.3, why wasn't the "switch flipped" as soon as the sports programming left the air? The move could have been done immediately. Why would they bother stunting for what, now...33 hrs...if WAGG's format were moving to 97.3?

Doesn't Clear Channel still have The Vulcan on in Birmingham? They re-launched it just before I moved a little over a year ago. If it's still on the air, shouldn't that be filling the void from WZRR?

The Vulcan leans Active/Modern rock within an occasional Classic Rock track. I think that helps fill the void some. 106.9 The Eagle leans Classic Rock but in format is "Classic Hits" and includes what I call 80's soft rock.

They must have done that sometime during Saturday AM... I tuned in while driving through Gadsden around 5 AM and they were still in Mono...

This is slightly off topic but someone mentioned the T-dega translator on 99.1 having a CP for Birmingham... As of about 3:30 Saturday morning they are still on air rebroadcasting Anniston's "The Fox" as I was listening in somewhere between Wedowee and Hollis Crossroads.

With Mr. Tanner in the building, could it be something rhythmic.....or Spanish ;D.

Whatever format that will end up on 97.3 will be batting with their strikes against it. It's probably the weakest FM signal in Birmingham (6.4 Kw), and I doubt it can be further upgraded to give it more power.

You'd think that would've inspired or freed The Zone from having to be so 'suburban' in its approach to sports talk. Then again, it was born with the intent of being a clone.

The "other radio board" is reporting that WZNN is now stunting with Hawaiian music as "Hula 97.3".

There is another radio board? I thought that one got shut down years ago....

I'm out of the market, what are they doing / saying / playing ?

If by some chance you read this before midnight, 97.3 WZNN is still streaming on 973thezone.com.
