Byron Kennedy will program and Kid and Ruben are almost signed to reunite for mornings as KZON Zone flips formats to Urban.

[EDIT]The cast of characters involved will translate to a solid urban radio staff. [EDIT]

[EDIT-vulgar content]

Another first time poster, who "knows it all." They seem to come out of the woodwork like termites on this board.

Too bad their previous knicknames don't show. Maybe the list would be too long.

Even if we were to somehow buy into any of this, why would the station flip to an Urban format, especially when the market doesn't demand it? This milquetoast market isn't going to go for that. Additionally, I am not sure if you're aware of this, but Kid has a job already--he does 7-9pm on KTAR. Why would he leave a job like that--where there's not much prep involved, hours are good, short hours, in favor of a station that is, at best, going to be in the rebuilding phase for a while.

Speculation is one thing, but laying something out as fact that clearly isn't is just foolish.

I can tell you this much, Byron has been hanging around the hallways according to my sales friend over at 840 north Central. As far as the 'urban' format goes, even if you don't believe it dosen't mean it's not true...although I admit I'm still surprised.

I heard this yesterday as well from someone who said they were in the know.
Flipping from the FreeFM to a Rhythmic Urban format. And yes, that K&R were going to be back in the mornings.
I guess they'd go head to head against Power and sort of against Kiss?

For what it's worth, I also heard from a very reliable source that it's Hip-hop with Byron Kennedy at the helm.

I'm with you on this one...

Personally I can't see Kid leaving KTAR for KZON. Kid has said on numerous occasions that he likes being at KTAR and that this is a dream job.

That said, if he did leave KTAR for KZON to do mornings, I know if anyone could make it work, it would be Kid.

Bryon hot temper - Kennedy? SALES PEOPLE BE AWARE!!! HE HATES YOU AND HE DOES NOT KNOW YOU! LOWWWWWW CLASS!

KMGX obviously has never done a radio talk show by his comments about Kid not having to do much shop prep. In my 10 years of talk radio, I prepped 2 hours for every hour on air each day to have a meaningful presentation. In fact, all the talk hosts I know that came from music radio said that talk was exponentially harder than music radio to prep for. If any talk show host thinks he can grab the Republic and Tribune and do a GOOD show, he's kidding himself. I once had a radio guy call that "7-11 Show Prep", and he's right.

You obviously know nothing about me then nor do you know (or bothered to carefully read) the context of the comments I wrote.

I don't want to have to break the news to you, but if you listen to most hosts on KTAR there isn't a whole lot of prep there, the style of talk is what we all call "survey radio". The host begins the show with a very brief monologue which immediately is a tie-in to the topic for that segment/hour, and then has their audience regurgitate a short 30-60 second answer and then move on to the next caller. "What type of restaurants do you enjoy, give me a call..." "What kinds of clothes do you like to wear, give me a call", "Which of these reality TV shows are you watching..." By the way, those are real KTAR topics from various hosts... if a host is actually doing prep that is longer than 10 minutes for that style of radio than they are very foolish.

Compelling talk radio in the 21st century (which is where KTAR should try to step into) doesn't revolve around asking a corny question and then soliciting calls for an answer. Most talk show hosts discuss a wide range of issues--or at least are capable of such, and relate how story x, y and z in the news relates to the audience, supports their point of view with facts or some type of evidence and then can discuss this with callers. Obviously the intangibles come into play like passion for what you're discussing, a hosts charisma and style, etc. Sorry to say it but KTAR's hosts all have a similar style that is stuck well into the early 1980s. It's not to besmirch Kid as much as it is the type of talk done on KTAR right now, period.

For anyone who doubts it, call the station. I know for a fact he's there right now. Whether they will transfer you to him is another story :)

IMO I respectfully disagree. Phoenix can heavily benefit from an Urban station. Power's signal is weak as hell and since there is no other straight-forward hip-hop station, and demographics of young adults in Phoenix are hip-hop heads, I'm positive Urban would do better than Free FM. Just my two cents.

I would defintley be all for them making 101.5 a hip hop station and make Power into Talk. Hip Hop fans get a full fledged signal and us talk fans get our fix as well.

I can almost guarantee you that Kid isn't going anywhere. I think for his career KTAR is a step in the direction he wants to go. I've even heard that he and Ruben aren't as close as they were in the past.

So can we assume since Big O and Dukes announced their last show was last night that the start of the flip happens at 8:00 tonight?

Nope, best ofs tonight. Guess its just a matter of time before we hear the hip hop beats at 101.5. It was a good 18 month ride

I noticed www.1015jamz.com is registered on godaddy.com and CBS uses godaddy to buy websites I believe. Also www.hot1015.com is registerd but not sure if CBS has that one. So I guess we can say maybe Hot might be a name too. CBS Radio does own a Urban by the name hot. Hot 93.7 in Hartford, CT.

No, it really wasn't that good.

If the last 18 months were so great, the station wouldn't be flipping.

A year and a half ago, CBS rolled out "Free FM" on all the former Stern-anchored stations. They launched it with great fanfare, and promoted the format with everything they had.

And it failed miserably. Across the board. Nationwide.

 Byron Kennedy is a NIGHTMARE. He is rude, crude and VERY angry. He treats everyone - from airstaff, to traffic, to sales, like cr@p. And he LOVES screaming.

Good Luck, CBS - you're going to need it with that guy running the show.
