Byron Allen gets the Colbert timeslot

That's a cute show. I had heard so much about it on CBS News Radio on TuneIn that I had to take a look and see what it was all about.
The character was introduced on “The Good Wife” years ago—-she appeared in 14 episodes between 2010 and 2016—and in five episodes of the spinoff “The Good Fight” between 2016 and 2022.

I always enjoyed her, never thought you could build a show around her, but they have and—-apart from a tendency to get maybe a little too silly two or three episodes a year, “Elsbeth” is a great show—-an homage to “Columbo” in that we get to see the murder and who did it, and then watch Elsbeth appear to bumble her way into catching them.

Has anyone seen last week's ratings for Comics Unleashed?

But those were just first night ratings, and I'm sure some of even those viewers were either curiosity driven or thought Colbert was still on and didn't change the channel. I wonder what the week of 5/25-5/29 was like?

It might take time for them to build an audience. I took a look at it the other night, and it was refreshing to watch something at least moderately funny, kind of low-key, and not politically charged. Nice way to end the day.

Agreed. It'll likely find it's niche. If it can sustain 1M+ viewers, it'll be meeting expectations, I think. It's unlikely to pull in what the predecessor programming in that slot did, but comes at a far lower production cost.

I’m more likely to become People’s “sexiest man alive” than that show is to sustain a million viewers. Direct comparisons to an understandably and unusually inflated finale day/week/month for Colbert aren’t good baselines at all, but there is no reason to believe it’s going to draw a million people on average.

Even at less than that, CBS will still get positive bash flow from it, and not be losing $40M a year.

Yeah, I’ll take their word that it was totally not a made up thing that just happened to coincide with a major deal approval. No connection there at all.

That aside, they most certainly will continue to get positive bash flow—the bashing ain’t ending anytime soon.

A wild card here is Trump. What if he starts plugging this show on Truth as a non-woke alternative to Colbert and Kimmel? Yeah, I know Allen and Colbert are supposedly friends, but this could happen if Allen's comedy stays uncontroversial.

These are kind of unfair. A better comparison would be to Colbert's normal numbers.

I've posted his "normal" numbers earlier in this thread, and they average around 2.5 million, vs 995K for Comics.

  • For the first quarter of 2026, The Late Show averaged about 2.69 million viewers per episode
  • Earlier in the season, the average was slightly lower at 2.73 million viewers in the week ending May 10, 2026

I haven't seen any recent numbers, so we don't yet know if Comics has improved.
