Cabarrus County's Last Local Station Turns Out the Studio Lights

Here's the article...

While there are still transmitter facilities in Concord and Kannapolis, that will leave the only broadcast studio in the county being the one at WRKB's facility on Fairview Street in Kannapolis. Since they are an almost total simulcast of China Grove's WRNA, I'm not sure if they're even using that studio any more.

More evidence that local, hometown radio is DEAD or DYING.

Later....

Thanks for the info Matt. At the risk of sounding like a cynic I don't think it makes much difference where WEGO broadcasts from. If I'm not mistaken WEGO is live in the morning but on satellite the rest of the day.

The studios on North Tryon aren't that far from Concord. I wonder if they are going to move or expand the building? I've been there and it's not very big, unless they have done some remodeling. Maybe they will simulcast WEGO and WAVO? Runng 3 separate stations out of that building even though WAVO is all on the computer seems like a squeeze.

In any case I wish them the best, Tom Gentry is a classy guy.

Matt, I'm not so sure there's a functioning studio at Kannapolis any more. Last time I talked with Carl, he told me the building was in poor repair, and wasn't heated or cooled. Such a shame- I know a lot of good folks whose careers began there.

As for the WEGO studio move- I have to give them credit for at least trying to keep the station alive. It would be real easy just to turn it off and take the writeoff... The studio can always be moved back to Concord if the economic situation improves. As Mike correctly notes, most listeners don't care where the studio is, in their perception, the station is as close as the radio they're listening to.

Regarding the current format, the last time I tried the station, they were doing oldies ("Pure Gold" they called it) and there were no DJs when I was listening, and no coordination with newscasts. The newscasts just aired whenever the song finished.
