Cable companies and misleading DTV statements

The local cable company in Phoenix, Cox, normally takes out a front-page ad in the Arizona Republic's "TV Week" section. This week, it was a sell for cable TV during the DTV transition. Here is one of the statements from the ad:

"If you rely on an antenna (set-top or rooftop) to view full power broadcast stations, you will not be able to receive the digital signals after June 12th."

No mention of converter boxes or built in DTV tuners.

Any other cable companies doing the same thing across the country?

So does that mean one can receive digital signals until June 12th, but not after? ::)

No wonder my fave name for them is the "stupid cable company." Well actually,
there is another derisive name but decorum prevents me from displaying it here. ;)

It doesn't help either when, during a newscast from the local ABC affiliate, the anchor tells viewers that starting June 12, they will be broadcasting in digital.

Kinda reminds ( though indirectly ) me of our local Winchester, Virginia "tv station", that being Gray's TV3 Winchester". TV3 Winchester's signal comes from Harrisonburg, Virginia's WHSV's digital tower which is a good 60 miles or so away from Winchester. Ever since that channel had signed on the air ( March 2007 ), everyone more/less assumed it was a "cable only" channel that was run by our local Comcast. Can't blame the viewers since until recently TV3 Winchester never really promoted this fact, at least on air anyway that their channel even had an OTA signal.

Now within the last few weeks I have notice that TV3 Winchester has started to promote that OTA signal..how some viewers can pick it up WITHOUT cable ( there is debate as to exactly how many equals "some" though").

The reason being for this change is that our local Comcast a few weeks ago announced they would be suspending local programming as far as shows they ( Comcast ) actually produced including one local cable talk show that has been around since 1968. Of course those who pick up TV3 Winchester..only through cable and think of TV3 Winchester as being some sort of Comcast production..well the rumors were flying around the area that Comcast will pull the plug on TV3 Winchester as well even though the channel/station is 100% Gray controlled while Comcast has/had little say with the channel other than having it available on local cable.

Time Warner advertised $7.95 a month shortly before Feb. 17. I took advantage. Good deal. Next year it'll be close to twice that, but still low.

I noticed they haven't been doing it this time around. They're advertising a good deal on digital cable. I wonder how much that will go up to after a year? I wonder how many people will think they have to get that?

A newspaper article warned us not to ask for "Basic". That's very expensive if all you want to do is continue getting the channels that are going digital.

Time Warner Charlotte most certainly has been heavily advertising the $7.95 basic cable special the last few weeks. My local cable company, Comporium, advertised a $6.95 basic (first 21 channels, including local broadcast) special the last go around in February but I haven't heard that repeated this time...

Comcast here in the SF Bay Area has TV commercials that state:
"There are only 3 ways to get digital TV reception after June 12.
1. Buy a new TV
2. Get a converter box or
3. Switch to Comcast Cable."

They forget to mention that if you have Satellite, you will receive TV reception. So there is at least 4 ways to get digital TV!

Comcast has been running ads on the radio that sound like an official PSA, until Comcast is mentioned as the way to be prepared for the digital transition.

To hell with Comcast and their lies! I have them here and I am so sick of their monopoly. Satellite isn't an option at my house either. I'm all set in my room for today's digital conversion, it seems. Let's hope for the best. :)

Cable companies, electronics retailers, antenna manufacturers (they're selling brand new "digital" antennas), TV manufacturers, and converter box manufacturers are all benefiting from the DTV transition.

I was listening to the radio in the mountains last week and the DJ said to be ready for the transition you needed to get Charter Digital Cable.

You don't need digital cable. Regular cable is enough. And if you don't want anything but broadcast channels, I'm guessing they have that. I forgot to look. However ...

Charter was very uncooperative when I tried to find out where the good music was coming from on the government channel. Oh, sure, after the "Live Chat" person shut down our session believing my question had been answered, a survey popped up for us to evaluate our experience. Negative responses to everything. Because, see, this person only sent me to the web site. The man running the government channel didn't tell me if he got the music from Charter or what. Maybe he was busy and I can try again. But nothing in their list looked like what I heard, and furthermore, it wouldn't let me back in after the "Live Chat" ended. I entered the address of my motel and was told that was not a valid address. I should go back to Charter and DEMAND answers, because the site shouldn't be that difficult to use for anyone.
