Cable Coverage Estimate - July 2011

I thought we would inform ourselves about the number of households some of our favorite cable channels stand at the current time. Thanks to TVByTheNumbers, they got an estimate for most of them (although not all. For example: no number yet from Sundance Channel).

Some things of note:

- G4's numbers dropped dramatically, by more than 10 million households

- ESPN Classic continues to decline in numbers, though as fast as before

- 13 channels surpassed the 100 million household mark, compared to 9 in October (I counted Nickelodeon and Nick-at-Nite as one as they share the same channel): ESPN, ESPN2, USA, Food Network, Nick/Nick-At-Nite, TNT, TBS, The Weather Channel, Lifetime, Headline News, CNN, Discovery, A&E

- 12 more channels are at the 99 million mark and above (I counted The Cartoon Channel and Adult Swim as one, as they share the same channel): MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Cartoon/Adult Swim, Disney Channel, FX, Fox News, History, Home & Garden, SyFy, Spike, TLC

- 12 more channels are at least between 90 and 99 million households: TV Land, CNBC, MSNBC, Travel Channel, TruTV, CMT, Bravo, BET, Animal Planet, AMC, ABC Family, E!

From my perspective, there is evidence to conclude that without backing from one of the media conglomerates (Viacom, Disney, News Corp, NBCU) it's very difficult to get cable carriage in many of the areas in the country.
