One of the cable providers in Fairfield/New Haven Counties in Connecticut had a service outage for several hours that knocked out Cable, Phone, and Internet. Fairfield police report they received numerous calls to complain about the outage.

Fine every single one of those dingbats and I bet they'll think twice about tying up 911 emergency lines again.

It's like the morons who leave their kids to die in hot cars during the summer. Until you start making an example out of some people, it will continue.

I doubt it would have any effect. People just do not realize how short a time period it takes for the interior of a car parked in the sun to heat up - even with the windows cracked. Those of us living in the very hot SW do know and that is why you don't see as much of that problem here.

And I agree with the poster who wants to fine 911 callers with non-emergencies. If it is a genuine mistake than let them off with a warning but if they are calling about their cable being out or for instructions on how to find an open tavern then book 'em Dano.

It looks like people here in the deep South would realize the problem as well, but it still happens here.

Then you also have the idiots that call 911 because somebody stole their marijuana. But then in the states where it's been legalized, this could be considered a legitimate call now.  ::)

And then there's this: "I got an emergency, what's the number for 911??"  :D

Did the outage occur around 8 P.M. EDT last night (August 18th)??

If so, many people were getting set to watch the baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees that ESPN nationally televised.

Supposedly, it was the most-watched ESPN baseball telecast so far this year and dominated the prime-time ratings here in Boston. In New York, it likely battled a pre-season NFL game between the Giants and the Indianapolis Colts on WHYW-5 for the title of the most-watched program of the night in that market.

The game likely dominated prime-time viewing in other parts of New England as well.

I point this out because if the cable outage took place around 8, you had a lot of angry fans who couldn't watch the Red Sox and Yankees!

Cable company's number is not as top-of-mind or as easy to remember.
For these people, the trunk and sides of a police car is pretty much the extent of their phone number memorization.
Maybe 211.

Because the people who answer the phones at the cable company are idiots.
They usually try to tell you the problem in in your house wiring or TV, and
will offer to send out a tech in two days.
