Cable News Channels

I know that the News 12 networks and NY1 are cable-only news channels. I was thinking, would it ever makes sense for channels like these to broadcast OTA, maybe on a LP channel, to gain additional audience? Or are the stations more profitable by only being available on cable? It just got me thinking because as a Directv subscriber I don't have access to News 12 or NY1. Directv does carry RNN but they are not a 24-hour news station.

RNN is an OTA the station (WRNN Kingston) but you bring up a good argument, with digital only coming in Feb '09 I wonder if some of these cable operated channels (news, public access, etc) might latch on to an OTA station as a subchannel.

This would be great! Afterall, not all of us has Cablevision as a cable provider.

At least I used to be able to get local news on the News12 website, but now you have to have a subscription to Cablevision. Having them OTA and/or on my cable company (Comcast) would be nice!

That's why Cablevision tells you that you can only get local news services like NY1 and News 12 on their cable system and "not phone company TV or anywhere else..." ;D

RNN... Yecch... Don't even get me started with them...

Cable needs services/channels that Phone company or Satellite doesn't have in order to be competitive. News 12 and On Demand is all I can think of though. Not sure if they'd let their own network viewable to everyone..especially if they limited their website to Cablevision subscribers only. Seems like a long shot.

RNN is a complete joke, they shouldn't even bother using that name, should just be called 'Infomerical Land'.

Actually Directv introduced an On Demand service about 6 months ago. It's still kind of a joke compared to cable's On Demand service, but it has potential.
