Cable "News" outlets

I urge everyone to check out BBC World News - which runs on BBC America, and on many PBS stations. Their coverage of world news is much more complete than anything cable or American network news offers. And the presentation is very up-to-date, interesting, and fast moving - not at all stodgy or dull like the BBC of decades past.

BBC World (their all news channel) is available on cable here and it's one of my favourite channels. I have CNN but I never watch it. CNN Headline News was removed from the cable dial to make ro0m for BBC World, a smart move in my opinion. The Canadian CTV Newsnet is also very go0d. CBC Newsworld has a lot of documentaries in the evening time.

At least Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper had the guts to question why Paris Hilton is newsworthy.

I certainly would not disagree with that.

Funny story, I was in the UK when she was freed from prison. Sky News was covering the devastating UK floods of last summer. What did they do? Break into that "breaking news" coverage to go live to LA where Paris was being released. Disgusting.

PDT at the moment

I'm going to revoke your right to call yourself an Arizonan. Shame on you.
;D

OK, YOU explain to someone in another time zone that Arizona (most of it anyway) doesn't acknowledge DST then let them try to figure out what time zone we are in (answer: MST all year but people can't cope with that answer).

I liked it better when we were on DST (back in the 60's if memory serves) and all our national programs didn't change when everyone else did. Didn't Evan Mecham start this nonsense?????? ;D

No, AZ used DST for one year, (1967, I believe), and immediately dumped it because as it is on Standard Time, it's still over 100 degrees when you go to bed at night in midsummer - now were going to be extending that one hour?

Actually, I don't find people have a problem grasping MST year-round. Those who do have a problem also have a problem getting their head around why we'd be on Mountain time in the winter and Pacific in the summer. Those familiar with Indiana didn't have a problem.

But, back to the topic: we do miss the early breaking news. I, for one, was in bed when the WTC towers were hit, and by the time I found out, around 7 AM here, one of the towers had already collapsed.

Why DO we fool around with this "turn the clock" nonsense anymore? Wasn't it originally established for the argricultural communities? But, were no longer majorically agricultural anymore. And still, whether it's 9pm or 8pm, the sun's going down either way. Why don't we all go to standard time and leave it at that? Or, how about we all go to GMT or Zulu time? Then we'd all be on the same page! Hey, argue with it if you want, but the "KISS" rule never fails! ;D

As a native and life-long resident of this fair state I'm going to go out on a limb and exclaim that one hour, when the sun has already set, is not going to affect anyone very much. Those of us living in the Arizona desert are either inside our air conditioned homes or businesses or in the swimming pool swilling down a cold, frosty one. Non-desert dwellers could care even less. And consider the fact there are many millions of people living in other American deserts, or even in the hot and humid Midwest on DST with no apparent shortcomings.

I love Arizona and I love being 'independant' but this is one case where it wasn't a good idea to buck the trend.

IMHO of course and YMMV.

Wolf Blitzer? Are you kidding? That "Situation Room" is the poster child of everything's wrong with cable news. I get dizzy watching that show! I'm not questioning his integrity, but whoever came up with that show has a lot of explaining to do.

I don't like the concept (no, I am NOT in the Situation Room, I am in my living room!!!), but the Wolf isn't a bad host. And I like Jack Cafferty, although his recent comments about the Chinese went a little too far.

I don't really watch CNN anyways. It seems to be more and more fluff pieces obtained from their "affiliates". I used to like Larry King but that show has been really dumbed down. Anderson Cooper is the MAN though.

I like Wolf Blitzer too (love the name,, is it real?) He has a good presentation. Also like Cafferty on that program.

My problem is the set. I can't stand all the video monitors, sometimes showing one picture, sometimes showing 3 or 4 different things. There is just too much crap on the screen at one time. Between the numerous video feeds, there is a crawl and a headline/subject at the bottom of the screen. The other day I had to laugh as they showed video on the 6 or 8 screens they have on the set, making one picture,,, but they showed us the video monitors,,showing the video. Yes, they were showing monitors showing video instead of just showing the video. Leave that crap to MTV

ALso a fan of Countdown with Keith Olberman. Agree or not, it is not dumbed down tv.

FOX,,, well,, they sure know how to make a story,,, a story.

I can't help but laugh sometimes reading posts about news choppers getting close to thunderstorm clouds and all the fluff on local and cable news. We just don't get much of that at all in Canada. Most TV markets don't even have a chopper.

Let's be honest, most TV markets don't NEED a chopper. I can understand NY, LA, Chicago and Philly perhaps. Here in New Haven, our local affiliate WTNH shares the chopper with co-owned WPRI in Providence, RI. It seems to me even those 2 combined markets don't warrant its use. Honestly, do we really need to see every car crash and police chase?

A bit off topic, I was curious as to whether MTV News has always been dumbed down, or whether MTV News actually had any integrity once like the network. I am not old enough to remember when MTV played music videos, but how has MTV News changed since Kurt Loder reported on the suicide of Kurt Cobain?

and since when is MTV showing news anymore? ::). Anyhow, a piece that I cannot stand is pieces by Jeanie Moss or whatever the heck her name is, like, who cares whether or not Dick Cheney falls asleep during speeches? come on, seriously now, give us the news straight instead of glamourizing it.

Jeannie Moos does "quirky, unusual and satiric" stories for CNN. Her segments are supposed to be humorous rather than hard news.

Or, here in Phoenix, where we had the tragic news helicopter collision not too long ago, each of the 5 tv news operations has a chopper.

Yeah, and it seems they are in use to cover far away forest fires, thunderstorms (from far away) and the never-ending promos.

You know what? That really isn't off topic. MTV hired a real media person who took "This Week In Rock" to start MTV News and that, of course, was Kurt Loder. Of course it was music and entertainment news, but it was very professional. When the "MTV Generation" got older, news outlets decided to copy MTV to make their news more "hip", hence the downfall of TV news. It worked for me to get interested in news since I was part of that "MTV Generation". But, as I've gotten out of the demographic (oddly enough since I'm only 31), MTV News has been targeting the younger "hip" crowd that cares less about news, and more about "Entertainment Tonight". Ergo, TV news has also gone the ET route. And the vicious cycle continues.
