Cable Television Networks

I think this is a bit of revisionist history- A&E used to show 25 hours a day of "Murder, She Wrote"- and MTV and all the others have always aired crap alongside music videos, etc. People tend to forget this- but shows like "Remote Control" and "Lip Service" were far from quality fare.

At the end of the day, these are businesses and their model only works if they attract eyeballs and then advertisers. If there was demand for X, then these channels would show X. However, the demand isn't there, so they evolve.

I think I've seen Cheers at weird times of the overnight hours (5:30AM after a long movie, etc) on USA, but comedies are very rare...

MTV really started their decend into what it is now starting in the early 90s, when they started adding more original non-music programming, with House of Style, Beavis and Butthead, The Real World, the expansion of MTV News, and the two aforementioned show among others.

The changes in the music business (along with the internet) pretty much forced MTV's (and their sister music networks) hand to change its programming format if wanted to remain relevant and survive.

So two-thirds of MTV's history involves airing non-music programming, and this was arguably when MTV had the highest culture reach and awareness, as programs like the Real World defined a generation. The music videos were great but they've always garnered their highest ratings from reality and scripted programming so they'd be fools to not continue in this fashion. Fifty years from now, MTV will probably be remembered for Pedro from Real World SF and the Osbournes, not for countless Aerosmith videos with Alicia Silverstone.

Every generation since non-music programming started showing up has joked about MTV not showing music videos anymore, and their complaints have gotten more and more hilarious as MTV has continually proved their ability to show even less music when you'd thought they ran out of blocks to cut, until they finally got rid of TRL and FNMTV and really didn't have any music anymore until AMTV started. As late as ten years ago, there was plenty of music on MTV if you knew where to look.

Exactly the point...MTV's spinoff networks (Jams, Hits, MTVU among others) have been around at least as long you stated, but you unless you have digital cable (and if your cable provider does provide those channels), you can't see those channels anywhere else. Even so, there's always YouTube and Vevo, plus MTV's own website.

the USA network was at its best in the days they showed a lot of cult movies.USA UP ALL NIGHT was great.

Here's a channel lineup from 1985 from a mid size town in Kentucky. Drop CNN and FNN and replace with FNC and Fox Business now, drop the dual broadcast networks that are on here and replace maybe with TNT, AMC and FX and this is a lineup that would more than serve my needs, and I suspect quite a few others.
Cause CNN and CNBC are part of that goldanged liberal media, doncha know?

Did TBS or USA ever have stated themes for them to drift from? Sure, they may have aired certain shows a lot, but a least nominally they were explicitly general entertainment channels. In fact, if anything TBS has gotten narrower with its "very funny" slogan.
TBS has become more of a comedy channel while sister networks TNT has become the drama channel & TCM has become a movie channel. Either way it's still entertainment

As for A&E, it airs some dramas but is mostly Reality beyond that (Afterall Art DOES imitate LIFE ;D)

Cheers & 73 ;D
