My dad has Cablevision and is quite annoyed at losing GSN. He says there was no warning. I wonder why GSN was chosen instead of something like Hallmark or Lifetime Movie Network, which sometimes go on an upper tier? And why put it into the Sports package except maybe there's no other logical tier package to put it in? I think my dad already gets most of the line-up other than Movie/Premium channels and Ethnic networks.
Maybe he doesn't get things like The Tennis Channel or CBS College Sports. So I guess if they want to charge more for GSN, that's where it will go, lumped with those special sports channels.
I hope Cablevision doesn't know something we don't, like GSN will morph into a specialty sports channel like Versus? On the other hand, GSN has a slate of first-run game shows they commissioned like Baggage and 1 vs. 100. They're about to add Drew Carey's Improv-a-ganza next month. So I don't think they're planning a format change.
Here's the connection:
There used to be a cable channel called Nick Games and Sports, and ESPN stands for The Entertainment and Sports Network. Games can be Entertainment. So, together the channels loosely tie the words Games with Sports.
Just a little association and the connection is valid. I suppose the same is true with cable tiers now.
It's just the same that if a black actor starred in a movie, even as a supporting actor where the rest of the cast wasn't black and the movie had nothing to do with race, the movie apparently is suited for Starz InBlack. Or, MTV airing reality TV shows, and the music connection is a pop song played in the background during the closing credits.
