Call-ins perceptibility

Did you ever had to tweak the car radio volume while listening to phone-ins? It's something that I "feel", the lack of perceptibility mainly on cell calls (almost 100% these days), and extended audio hybrids, where the LF is boosted...
 
I have seen setup's in the past that use a compressor on the incoming phone line to help fatten the calls up.
I you ever listen to Hannity's "News Maker" line the sound on that thing is beautiful!
Not sure if all the newer boards have built in eq and compression but one of the newer boards had that built into each channel so I added a bit of mid eq and compression to help with what you are talking about.
 
There are times when I just can't understand cell calls on the air. After all, cell phone audio quality is hind teat to texting capability, internet access, camera quality, and just about anything else on the phone.

I know of several stations that have parked Compellors or Prisms on their phone hybrids trying to get a little consistency in the caller audio.
 
I do a trick to increase the perceptibility on pre-rec call-ins. I process the audio clips adding a little clipping to increase the "loudness", decrease lf, since it's limited bandwith "side-effects" are bearable. It works on air...
 
Some of the newer hybrids have agc built in. E.G. the Telos One series.

Adding EQ after the hybrid helps as well, I use an ART equalizer after a Gentner SP3 to sweeten the audio.
 
When I put the PCM link on WURD, I found that our Comrex STAC had a subsonic about 20 db down, which the link let right through. We never heard it with the 15 kHz analog line.
I equalized it out with an old Shure mono 10 band equalizer that I found at the transmitter and recapped. I also EQ the two ends of the phone spectrum (about a 5 db boost at 200 Hz and another 5 db boost at 4 kHz). It evens out the calls a bit. My web stream uses Stereo Tool 6.21 and its ten band compressor makes phone calls sound NICE.
