Call Letter Changes

So why is it taking the FCC so long for the WCIN to WDJO call letter change or is there some other problem going on? It did not take very long to go from WDJO to WQRT.

I thought the original WDJO (in the '80s) got its call letters by advancing one letter in each of the letters in CIN.

CIN = DJO = EKP and so on.

If the new owners of 1480 want to keep the WCIN calls, they are certainly not making much use of them. No hurry to have the jingles resung to WCIN (they slice off the current version).

It looks like they want the WDJO call letters. That is what is showing on the top of their web page and just found this out looking on the FCC web page.
Just seems like a long time from 6/15/09 and still nothing.

The REAL reason is money. From an application filed yesterday (9/9/09):

THE PARTIES TO THE SUBJECT TRANSACTION HEREBY REQUEST AN ADDITIONAL 90 DAYS, UNTIL DECEMBER 13, 2009, TO CONSUMMATE THE ASSIGNMENT OF WCIN(AM), CINCINNATI, OH (FIN 32953) FROM AMERICAN BROADCASTING, LLC TO ALCHEMY II BROADCASTING, LLC. ADDITIONAL TIME IS NEEDED IN THIS ECONOMIC CLIMATE SO THAT THE BUYER MAY SECURE FINANCING.

This isn't the first extension they've requested. Economy's a b*tch, ain't it? Don't look for the return of the WDJO calls until December, IF they can get the financing. If not, say goodbye to your oldies.

Dose this mean someone else could snatch up the WDJO call letters in the meantime?

Also, times are especially tough for stand alone AM operators like WDJO/WCIN. I hope they obtain all the financing they need because they have a great oldies operation and I'm impressed.

Still the best oldies station i have heard. XM/Sirius should take notes.
I think that the calls are safe. They may need to file and extension on the calls as well. I may be wrong on this as i am a bit fuzzy on the call sign rules.
Here is to hoping that they get the financing wrapped up.

As long as the extension is secured, the call letters are secured as well. No one else will be able to pick them up unless the extension is denied for some reason. At this point, there is no reason for the FCC to deny.

Really no reason you can't be WDJO except for a quick "WCIN Cinncinati" at the top of the hour, is there? (The chopped up jingles sound kinda crappy for some reason).. Others have done it (first I remember was KYST near Houston when they did an all Beatles format..they were "KBTL" except for the legal ID.)

550 USED TO DO IT ... during its WLW-A days ...

I remember the TOH announcement as This WAS WKRC Cincinnati, now 550-WLW; later it was changed to incorporate the WLWA call letters.

Update: Someone on the internet had the TOH announcement during its WLWA days ... "Promoted as "WLW 550," the real calls were cleverly disguised at the top of each hour, when a promo proudly proclaimed, "550 WLW A Cincinnati Radio Station!"

No it was whatever the legal calls were before WPPT I don't remember all of them so I just said WWEZ. They hid the legal ID as "this is not(whatever the legal calls were)

When Jacor Expanded and changed calls on station or couldnt totally change calls on stations still stuff was final they did that often it seems. First at 550. i remember they did that also when WSAI went from 1360 to 1530 and had the operator thing. The Station you were looking for has moved.

I remember that in Louisville it was a mess too. For one week, we had a Jacor morning team (Peter B. and Joe of WDJX) playing on 3 or 4 frequencies until the new formats could be established. Seemed like a complete meltdown, and the djs took it in stride. Wish I had an aircheck of this.

even though technically Jacor never owned the Indy Cluster of CLear channel. the last format change of an Indianapolis Station was when WNDE flipped from News/Talk/Sports to all Sports in 1995ish range. WFXF flipped to WRZX in August of 1992. and WFBQ Switched back in 1978. so usually the Clear channel indy stations have been the most stable stations since the early 90's in terms of flips. the only other station not to flip or move has been WFMS.
