call letters as domain name

Anyone here think that the call letters for a local station as a domain name would be useful the station?

I grabbed the domain recently, but don't know what, if anything, to do with it.

Only if that's also what they go by I'd say.

I'll use WBCN as an example since they don't really exist around here anymore.

If they go by "WBCN" which they did then yes WBCN.COM would be a valuable web addy.

but if they had always gone by "the rock of boston" and no one really knew (outside of those who post on this message board and always know the Calls) that they were actually WBCN then no it wouldn't be that valuable as people would prob be more likely to go to "therockofboston.com" or something like that

so it depends on the situation really

Yeah I see your point. The call letters are for the sports hub (WBZ-FM.com) and I'm not sure if anyone refers to the station by that or not. Might be useful as a redirect though.

they are not going to pay you a million dollars for the domain, and they could go to the international domain name resolution board for grabbing them, as Entercom did with the person who grabbed HowieCarr.com.

One of the BCN DJ's had their name squatted and thy also took legal action IIRC

Most savy companies register all good domain names early on in the process of flipping. That's one of the ways we can figure out a flip before it happens.. we go to Whois and see what has been registered and to what company.

There are enough ways to format a domain so a station can always find something they can image with without being extorted.

Neither of the stations I work for have their calls as a domain, and even when we could have had them for nothing we didn't take them.

CBS Radio already has wbzfm.com registered. I'm sure if they wanted to mention the call letters in any way, they'd be more likey to use that than one with a dash.

Small market stations are more likely to use their actual call letters as part of their image, particularly if the station has a long heritage within the community. But if you go to Radio-Location and go plowing down through such stations you will find the have interesting domain names that build around the call letters or the frequency rather than the call letters. The reason being: "squatters" have registered all the call letters as domains thinking radio stations are rich and will certainly pay royally to buy the domain name. Stations take the easy way out and register as "1270radio" or something like that.

I tried to grab my own last name as a domain but it is unavailable. There is no website currently using the name.... just a screen offering to set up an e-mail account using the domain name. If I really, really wanted the domain name I assume waving some cash around over my head would flush out a willing seller.

Selection of a domain name for a station is one of the ingredients of setting the image for the station.
