Call letters at CHHR 104.3 Vancouver will change to CHLG

The latest Industry Canada broadcasting database reveals that Newcap will be changing the call letters at CHHR (SHORE 104.3) Vancouver to CHLG. This only adds to the speculation that Newcap is planning an Oldies/Classic Hits format incorporating the heritage Vancouver LG moniker in the new branding at the station.

Hmmmm, is this the station Philip Kushnir is trying to acquire?

This is both good and bad news.

Good: Vancouver doesn't have a station that really targets the classic hits market. Classic rock 101 (CFMI) and All Time Favourites (CISL) capture very contrasting ends of the spectrum.

Bad: CHHR is a better station than CKPK for AAA music in my opinion. If you compared CKPK to the old KMTT 103.7 and KINK 101.9 in Portland, you would see that CKPK sticks to current, typical AAA music and CanCon tracks. Bad? Not necessarily, but I didn't think it was fantastic.

I have a feeling CKPK will get better once CHHR flips.

Not only that, but you would logically think that the 1.6 share CHHR got in the latest PPM's will migrate over to CKPK complimenting the 3.2 share that they received. A 4.8 would put CKPK in the #10 position (ahead of Sonic, CFOX, CBC 2, Team 1040, etc.).

The other thing worth mentioning is I wonder how Rogers will react to Newcap's choice of CHLG? In a PPM world call letters seem irrelevant, however Rogers does own CKLG 96.9 (Jack FM) in the market. That could very well be grounds to protest Newcaps decision based on a scenario that once JACK has run its course Rogers has plans to bring the LG brand back on 96.9.

Certainly; thats why I expect CKPK to drastically improve with CHHR out of the way. At their current stage, they identify as AAA, but do not play many tracks that other AAA radio stations play. I hope they will throw in some 80's and 90's tracks with the flip because you hear a lot of classic songs by Tracy Chapman, Bruce Hornsby, Eddie Brickell, and even Bonnie Raitt on heritage AAA stations like KFOG (San Francisco) or KINK (Portland). It seems to me that variety is a great thing to have with AAA. Not to mention, I have yet to hear a song from the Canadian band "Wake Owl" on CKPK (when they are on CBC radio 2 and other AAA stations quite frequently). I'd like to see CKPK be a little more risky. CHHR is already doing this.

I think that Rogers should have stuck with classic hits on Jack. The CKLG calls are deserving of the format they produced back in the day (even though real oldies were never part of the CKLG playlist). I will admit, however, today's CKLG continues to amaze me. They will play anything!

Real oldies were part of CKLG's playlist when they went top 40 in the early 60's. Only then, they weren't oldies, they were current hits.

Thats true. I would love to see "LG73 - True Oldies for the Lower Mainland" back on 730am. Cool, yes, but not going to happen.

If Corus had half a brain they would do Oldies on 730. Guaranteed to be a lot more popular than the current All Traffic format which barely has a pulse in the ratings.

Perhaps you can correct me if I am wrong, but I think CISL 650 had good ratings when they were a 50's and 60's oldies radio station (late 2000's). They have since morphed into an oldies station which plays more standards and classic hits intermixed with oldies tracks. CISL posted a respectable 2.3 in the ratings; therefore, I have a feeling an oldies radio station on 730 emulating the LG moniker would be successful.

The on-air staff at SHORE 104.3 was blown out today. It's beginning to look like the flip to LG 104.3 might happen before the predicted July 1st long weekend. Perhaps the first day of summer might be an appropriate launch date?

It will be interesting to see what it sounds like. Probably no different than when CFUN 104.9 was classic hits.

For the type of station that "Sonic" is, that 3.6 in the ratings is not very impressive.

Obviously change is coming. By using new calls before anything else new happens it merely hides what they may really do as a new format.
The last thing they would want is for their competition to know what they're actually doing next.
Most importantly, they sure wouldn't want anyone to beat them to this new format they switch to...whatever it may be...
(although most respectfully, the above comments are not intended to rule out the very idea that maybe LG really is coming...)

Another thing to look for is, what have they registered recently as possible new website domains? (merely a fun teaser, but sometimes a dead giveaway)

I wonder what is going to happen with CFTE 1410. Sure, it is a great spill station for Team 1040 programming, but its still putting up bad numbers with a 0.3 in the last PPM.

Has anyone else had an awful time trying to receive CKST? The signal is garbage for me.

Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, The Beatles, and Madonna..... I can hardly retain my excitement.

Here's to hoping that CKPK picks up the old CHHR programming and joins the rankings of AAA stations like KFOG that have excellent playlists. Of course, there is always room for debate over what makes a good playlist. I think it would be a huge improvement for CKPK, however.

Just an update on the situation: The "Shore 104" Facebook fan page is ablaze with angry listeners leaving their 0.02 on the switch. It sounds like there are a lot of people upset about the sacrifice of Shore to make room for the new LG. As I too listened to Shore from time to time, I also am disappointing in the switch.

What are there more of? Angry Shore fans in Vancouver? Or Angry "Where's my bear?" fans in Ottawa?

Either way, both stations are gone forever...although I do see it possible that Ottawa's 106.9 might go back to a rock format of some sort when they realize top 40 is not what they thought it would be for their bottom line. (I'm thinking a variety rock formatted Wolf 106.9, since Corus radio owns the rights to that name, but not bear)

I never had the chance to check out The Bear, but its a shame that it was lost in favour of more CHR. I see the day coming that I will have no choice but to find another form of music distribution as opposed to radio.

I realize that changing the format of CHHR was needed, but the new format is far from impressive. I was hopeful that the CHLG would include something different than what we have been getting from other stations in town.

If it's such a great idea, why didn't Rogers go with "LG" long ago? I'm guessing they still want to keep the Jack cookie cutter alive...?
