I never worked at WSCR but the station was part of my
youth right there alongside WARM. The late Ed Hughes did
the news in the morning, Bill Stewart was the morning guy
followed by Vince Albert, then Scotty Young and then
Frantic Freddie. Tom Rice was the owner and there was
the story of Rice's son getting killed in a motorcycle
accident. The station had surveys they handed out at
local stores and took more chances with new music than
WARM did. If you heard a local record first, most likely
it would be on WSCR. I think at one point they carried
the Yankees. And I recall the time checks being
sponsored, "It's 11:16AM, Castle Restaraunt Dining Time"
which came from the voice of Vince Alberts.
Those are my memories.

I did not work for 1320, but I worked a number of years for Bob & Al
"Heckle & Jeckle" Lessner as the Operations Manager of WINR in Binghamton.
Bob & Al..who never paid a bill until the electic company was at your meter ready to pull the plug. Bob & Al..who whenever you called ANY sort of supplier
always told you..Sorry, we cannot ship {insert item here} because we've not had any payment on the account in the past year. Bob & Al..who always reminded you that no matter how well you did a job, it could always be done better in Beacon.
I'm sure there are many other stories others can tell about these two.

Don't forget their original 13 Q air staff. Jack Griswold Mornings, Bobby "Gunther" Walsh mid days, Chris Starr (PD) afternoons and Emery Kernish evenings before Paul Cilaberto. GM Don Rider before Woody.

The Sparrow

Does anyone remember The Sparrow? Back in the WSCR days they had some kind of mascot or character, The Sparrow. Guy in a bird suit, at least I think the head of the bird maybe? I forget now. We're talking 1968 maybe?

I don't know the guy or if it was just some kid in a suit they sent around or what, just reading the thread and rememberd that.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

WARM did The Sparrow. It was a local rip off of Chickman. A guy by the name of Brono Galleger used to dress up in a custom for parades and promotions also as that character (circa 1967 or so).

I do think it was WARM because I remember the button and
thinking what a rip off it was. I'm thinking 1966 when
WCFL in Chicago ran the "ChickenMan" series. The tag line
was "he's everywhere, he's everywhere!!!" Around early '67
WARM started doing The Sparrow and did have Bruno Gallagher
dress up. He also dressed up as Mother Fletcher for the WARM
Softball Softies games too.
WSCR to my knowledge played it kind of straight with low
impact contests and publicity.

Yonk, you are the unofficial class historian here so I defer to your near-flawless memory.

The key word here is "near". I'm just saying what I
remember. We'll track it down for you.

Wasn't Emery James,Emery Kernish or something?

Remember the the late 60's line up with Frantic Freddie. Later it was
Bill Stewart mornings
Vince Alberts mid days
Bill Stewart AGAIN for an hour and then the loooong shirt 4p to 11pm with Bruce Michaels (Jim Drucker before him). 6 to 7 pm was news and some religion show, if I remember correctly? (Anything for a buck). Everyone used to switch to WARM from 6 to 7 PM LOL. They signed off at 11 pm or midnight. You had to have a first class ticket to work there at night in those days and most of the jocks when to this school in Florida who crammed the answers to the FCC tests into you so you would pass the test.

I believe that is correct. If my memory is also correct it seems that I remember something about him later taking a job as Englebert Humperdink's chauffer.
