Lez Get Real reports that Clear Channel, a major sponsor of SF Pride [EDIT], has strong-armed Pride organizers into banning the trio, who were "axed, shunned and rejected despite their years of entrenched relationship with the event."

It's likely that Clear Channel was none too happy when St. John ended his 14-year stint at Clear Channel’s Wild 94.9 and moved to CBS’s Movin’ 99.7, KMVQ-FM, reuniting with Michael Martin, former Program Director for Clear Channel, who is now Vice President of Programming for CBS RADIO San Francisco.

Lez Get Real says that Pride producers assert that Clear Channel's sponsorship enables coverage of the Parade to include "a full-length, unedited online broadcast, in addition to televised coverage the evening following the Parade’s conclusion."

Hm, sounds like Pride's soul got sold out a little bit this year.

I don't work for either company, but here's my view: If I sponsor an event, I don't want my competition to be a part of it. If they want this DJ, then his company should be willing to sponsor.

It's kinda petty politics. St. John was at Clear Channel's Wild 94.9 for years & years, and was their ambassador at Pride. When he jumped across town last year, I guess the CCU market manager decided to play scorched-earth.

Agreed, CBS should have ponied up and sponsored too. No info on this subject, but I suspect market ops mgr Michael Martin tried to get it approved and got beaten down on it.

The Movin' crew are making the most of it anyway, and may be feted and toasted as the victims of corporate oppression - it's looking a bit that way already.

[ And I miss doing the Pride remotes for Energy. It was always something challenging and amusing. ]

Uh...wait a minute. I thought Clear Channel was this ultra right wing company that ran all these right wing talk stations to promote the Mays' family's personal political viewpoints and they're sponsoring a gay pride parade? Hardly a right wing cause.

They're all about making money. They play both sides of the fence.

Same with FOX...look at their FOXNews Channel, totally right-wing conservative and loved my religious groups. Then look at the FOX network...full of programming that would normally offend religious groups, but probably get a free pass because of FOXNews. Take a good look at Jillian Barbieri and the way she dresses so revealing.....Tube-top will giving the weather during football games or on Good Day LA.

Or maybe they're about serving the public. In SF, sponsoring pride day will look great in the public file. I read a lot of comments about radio not serving the public, but this is often how they do it. Sponsoring a community event like this is more useful than a one-hour public affairs show Sunday at 6AM.

Right - it's all about profits - which are what capitalism is all about, right? Popular right wing talk shows make money. But don't forget that Clear Channel was willing to run Air America programming on 960.

A couple of years ago, I read an interview with Rupert Murdoch. While being somewhat coy about his personal politics, he implied strongly that he's not personally as conservative as the programming he allows on Fox News Channel. He doesn't have to be - he hired former right-wing operative Roger Ailes to run the network. Aside from the envelope-pushing programming on the regular Fox network, remember that Murdoch made his first millions on British tabloid newspapers that featured bare-breasted women.

On the flip-side, many people are convinced that NBC Universal is now some left-wing monolith, because of MSNBC. But their business network CNBC is full of conservative commentators.
