I am authoring this post in regards to something that may sound silly. I however don't wish to disrespect this message posting service with comments some may think are based on humor. So please don't think I'm trying to start a disrespectful thread here. My question is why have different KFRC air personalities referred to Cammy Blackstone as Hammy Cammy? Are they implying that she is a Microphone hog. She seems so nice, that is why I am wondering.

Thanks to you all!

Im loving my Trip to San Francisco!

> I first heard Cammy refered to as "Hammy" probably about 8 years ago by radio critic Bill Mann who wrote for radiodigest.com - a now long-defunct radio website that crashed during the dot-bomb era. If I remember correctly, Mann's name for the show was "Wan and Hammy," the "Wan" being Ron Parker, her then co-host. Mann didn't have a lot of credibility for me because he basically despised all radio DJs on sight - especially the DogHouse. Mann only liked KCBS, and Lamont and Tonelli, for some reason. I don't consider Cammy a microphone hog necessarily - it's basically HER show now after all, but most people dis her because they feel she has no talent, and is neither amusing nor clever.

Hey, now! I founded RadioDigest.com way back when as an offshoot of the Bay Area Radio Digest, which was first published as a print magazine back in 1979. It was a lot of fun doing the print edition, and when we entered the Internet age -- first with a BBS (remember those?) and then with the website -- it got a lot easier to do.

So we expanded into a bunch of other markets. And it became less like fun and more like work. I bailed early in 1999 and moved to New York. Under new owners and management, RadioDigest.com lasted until December 26, 2000.

I still own 400,000 shares in the company. I'm sure that my stock certificates are worth more as scratch pads than as what they were intended to be. I may put them on Ebay some day to make a buck or two.

After returning from New York in 2002, I still had a couple of dozen cartons full of old radio stuff that I had collected over four decades; this became the basis for the Bay Area Radio Museum (link below) which is thriving beyond my wildest expectations.

And, just to keep my hand in the game, I still write a blog using the old Bay Area Radio Digest brand name (link also below), featuring material mostly stolen from those of you who post on this board. The blog gets about 300 visitors a day, which is about 1% of what the old RadioDigest.com used to get.

But I'm having fun again.

Loved Radiodigest.com, hated Bill Mann. A very unpleasant human being.

Re: RadioDigest.com (Was: Cammy Blackstone)

Had a couple of short conversations with Mr. Mann long ago. He was always ready with an opinion that there was almost nothing good at all on any radio anywhere unless, of course, they happened to have him on as a guest.

Re: RadioDigest.com (Was: Cammy Blackstone)

My favorite Mann memory is him showing up at various station functions in a dirty, food stained shirt and flip flops and asking "Where's the food"?

Good times...

Hey Boss Radio,

I hope it didn't sound like I was criticizing RadioDigest. I liked it very much and grieved when it passed away. I enjoyed the contributions of some of the correspondents - especially Tomm Looney, and EVEN Bill Mann. But his views were a little extreme. I remember writing him an email defending the Dog House (please forgive me - this was years ago), and he wrote be back a scathing reply that basically questioned my integrity and intelligence.

Re: Bill Mann

I was an avid RadioDigest-er! When they went to a PAY format, I wrote Bill Mann with my concern that the radio community wouldn't have $$ for such a service. He wrote me back saying (essentially): Radio Digest (in a pay format) will be the most successful "publication" ever to deal with the industry! He went on to say that I, in contrast, would NEVER experience success with such a narrow-minded attitude! He went on to rip-apart my credibility as a jock and production guy.

Interestingly, I'm still here (in the biz in SF)... and Radio Digest isn't. I concur with the others that he's a MOST unpleasant (and probably unhappy) human being.

I seem to recall (I could be wrong here) subscribing to the pay service and then Bill's columns came farther and farther apart, until they eventually stopped.

Upon question/comment/complaint to the proprietor of rd.com, he was very gracious in offering me a refund. . .

It was a great website while it lasted.
