Campiest Show Ever on TV

just because it is campy does not make it not fun to watch.

I must agree.
Few shows have ever done so well at wearing a smirk the whole time.
When Julie Newmar or Lee Meriweather were playing Catwoman, seducing Batman,
there was a special, dirty yet clean feeling, very hard to reproduce in today's unleashed media.
That's why it was so memorable.
This is a very practiced aura that comes from walking a fine line in an alternate universe.
There were other very campy delights from that era.
The movie Skidoo comes to mind.

Only possible contender I can see is the Addams Family, who also "live" an alternate reality.

Runner up might be "Police Squad". Cracked me up at the end of every episode when all the characters froze on the screen while the credits ran.

"Police Squad...In Color!"

How about "The New Shmoo" from Hanna-Barbera? (Known in a New York Times parody paper as "The Savage World Of The Hanna-Barbarians?")

Police Squad took comedy to a new level. Leslie Nielsen was fantastic! (Along with Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln) ;D

However Batman has to take top prize for being the campiest show ever on television.

How about twin shows "Captain Nice" and "Mr. Terrific"?

As someone who thought Police Squad! was THE funniest TV show ever, I don't think "camp" would fit it. Too clever for its own good. Too good for TV, IOW. (I think I read or heard that the staff fought off ABC's wish for a laugh track.)

There was its replacement, "No Soap, Radio," which might fit the bill....

Also you have to consider "The Gong Show" as well.

I have to agree with you about "Police Squad!" I think what
hurt the show, but made it more effective as a series of movies,
was that you had to watch, because things would be going
on in the background that were even funnier. And it was great
lampooning TV customs, such as the cast members standing stock
still and trying to hold a pose while the credits rolled--a parody of
the "freeze frame."

You mentioned "The Gong Show": I might throw in "The $1.98
Beauty Show," although I'm not sure the proper description is
"campy" or "tacky."

I think it was an ABC exec that actually *said* that about PS! (i.e, one had to actually *watch*....Imagine that, actually having to watch the show) as to the reason for cancellation.

I believe that in the UK, the 6 PS! episodes *were* put together as a movie.

Never saw $1.98 because I was stationed in Alaska at that time, and very few syndicated game shows eked into Anchorage!

As opposed to "Fred And Barney Meet The Shmoo"? (That had to be one awkward meeting. :-X )

Or "Fred & Barney Meet The Thing", which was the same show, minus the Shmoo segments. "The Thing" in reference is Ben Grimm from "The Fantastic Four", in his own adventures without the other team members. The Thing's origins and portayal in this series is vastly different from the Fantastic Four version.

Neither The Flintstones nor The Thing appeared in each other's segments, though they do appear together in brief links between the segments -- one that stuck in my mind is Fred and Barney tap dancing with The Thing.
