Campus & Community Calendars?

As a news director for my college radio station (WSAJ-FM Grove City, PA), I have thought quite a bit about trying to do some type of campus and community calendar to announce upcoming events that aren't necessarily "hard" news (as my journalism class would classify it). I'm just curious as to how many of you out there have tried to do this and what the response is from listeners, DJs, etc. Any response would be appreciated... thanks.

At WUSB (Stony Brook, NY), on-air DJ's are asked to air at least two public service announcements per hour. We have some digitally recorded, while others are kept in a folder by the main studio console for on-air live reads by the DJ's. This is a very good way to build strong relationships with the campus and with the community, and will also look good in your station's public file.

For the most part, our DJ's are free to determine when is the best time within their timeslot to air the PSA's...some do it as part of an extended break with various station promo's and a legal ID, others do it when they come on the mike to speak. It hasn't been a problem and is a win-win for the station and for the campus and community.

If your radio station has a mailbox on campus, odds are that various clubs and organizations or your student government will leave flyers for various events in there at various times. You could also leave flyers in other organizations' mailboxes, soliciting PSA's and announcements. Letting your administration and your student government know that an opportunity for publicity exists (free, or reciprocated in some way) also helps.

If your radio station gets out into town or the surrounding community, reaching out to local non-profit organizations is another excellent idea, as is appearing at local events, fairs, concerts, etc.

Good luck!

My college's station (WGLS-fm, Glassboro, NJ) does a campus calendar at our :36 break and a community calendar at our :47 break. We just keep a box of cards and the DJ picks one for each break. We keep non-timely ones on hand (library info, how to get a passport in town, museum promos, etc) for when there's not much going on.

I used to work in a small college town and we had to do community calender type events...so, here's my suggestion.
You write the calender event like you would a news story and incorporate it into your newscast (i think that's what your asking) You use it late in the cast, or perhaps as a buffer as your going to break (if you plan to come back and do more news). You can contact organizers for more than just casual info that would be used by a dj....

The local blood bank is hoping to restock supplies this afternoon. The Gamma Gamma Gamma fraternity and the local blood bank are teaming up for a blood drive in front of the science building today from noon to 5.

And the Tiger cheerleaders will be holding a bake sale this morning from 9 to 11 in front of the arts building.

sports, traffic and weather up next....WWWW newstime 7:10

The other thing you can do, is flag the upcoming stories.....
news story
news story
news story,

and from the community calendar (or campus calendar) ....

Just my thoughts, good luck.
