Can a brotha get an ACTIVE ROCKER?

I kinda feel the responses breathing down my neck already. I just wanted to say it. Rock on, 96... but it's a Classic Rock That Really Rocks station if not simply a Classic.

Starting an Alt would just send someone down the plank in Raleigh (I get the feeling the genre's never had a strong presence)... but what if... WHAT IF... someone threw on something like 96-- with an edge? Less nibble, More BITE. Less Foreigner, more Godsmack, Nirvana, Linkin Park, Metallica-- you know what I'm sayin'.

This is not to ignore the college station's attempts at livening things up. They're super.

SO what of it? You think Jay would turn things up at 96 if competition came thru-- or would they just go total Classic? I mean, there're the hip hop listeners just out for adrenaline music, so an audience is feasible, right? It could be Mudvayne just as easy as... well... uh... Comparable Hip Hop Artist.

Expain & discuss. Repeat.

if someone put that kind of station on the air i would delete 96.1 off of my preset. I would say if a station like that came around 96 rock would be changed inside a year. Chadd you would a loyal listener right here!

I don't understand the lack of new rock being played in RDU and GSO both. A balls to the wall Alt or Active station won't work. You cannot sell it. BUT...BUUUUUT. People DO like Foo Fighters. People DO like Tool. People DO like Godsmack. I'd drop the Foreigner, Fleetwood Mac, Kansas stuff we've all heard 8 billion times. I'd add a lil deeper cuts from the core artists. Can I get "Walkin the Dog" instead of "Walk This Way" once in a while??? Add some currents...and violia' You got yerself a ROCK station...Not classic, not active...a good ol RAWK station. Ohhh... and please no Bob & Tom or John Boy & Billy

Dream On...no literally, dream on.

Look, a good rock station doesn't have to start with some syndicated morning zoo... or even dis on classic. You've got your Zep, Floyd, Hendrix... and depending on research, even Phil Collins, Skynyrd and Eagles. Use only the stuff that tests... and MOVES (likely the material that classic fans are burnt on)... But you've gotta get some currents in there-- even if just a little. The core artists will be the first 2 from above, Metallica (yes, still), Tool, Linkin Park, Pearl Jam, Rage, STP, Godsmack, Sublime, etc. A rock station is in the music, attitude and "cool" factor that comes with good imaging, good promotions (despite no budget), relatable personalities (in THAT order).

Zep - Kashmir
Talk
Breaking Benjamin (flavor of the week)
Music image or 'Tude
STP - Sex Type Thing
Quick Sweep
Sublime - Wrong Way
Talk
promo
Commercials
talk
current
sweep
core
sweep
recurrent

Or something like that.

Is it too much to ask?

You know,

I agree with you Chadd, but also most rock stations are corporate owned and I feel in my own opinion that they are out of touch with the listeners that want a rock station without all of the crap that airs in between.

WBBB (96 Rock) and WRCQ (Rock 103.5) are vieing for position in the rock genre in Raleigh, since they do not have WRDU to kick around any more.

WVBZ and WKRR are too busy competing with one another for the title of "The Classic Rock Station."

My Internet Rock station (Burlington, NC) does well when it wants but isn't really in competition that much with either markets. "LOL"

But, How close are they with the actual rock listeners that want to hear "REAL ROCK." Something that is missing in this area for a long time. its all in the matters of imaging, promotions, personalities, but also what makes it a dominator of the format is to be in touch with the listeners and what they want, instead of sitting behind a nice chair and smoking the cigars, and not giving a rats patoot what any of the listeners really want to hear.

Sorry for my rambling, but just wanted to chime in with my two cents. lol!

Chadd, the question with that sort of station is, who's your target? Research shows a huge disconnect at about age 35 in men for new and classic artists. Guys 35 plus who love Skynyrd and Zep aren't going to listen to Linkin Park or Breaking Benjamin. You may be able to go very current with a dash of older stuff, but most 23 year olds don't want to hear 99% of what's on a classic rocker. It's very difficult to balance.

WRCQ is a Fayetteville station that doesn't even show up in the Raleigh ratings

Well,

I can hear them faintly around Cary.. I assumed they were in the Raleigh book.

:-/ I'm only human! lol!

103.5 usually comes in good in Wake Forest.
Well it's usually in the car now that I think about it.
So enjoy it in your ride, like I do! ;D

I always do, when i'm in the Wake Forest area.. but too bad they aren't looking for people.. LOL

I would love to work for that station.

Good Active Rocker...... project 9-6-1 in Atlanta....Took The WKLS-96rock signal and added a ton of balls and volume! www.project961.com

The jocks are ok but the music is one of the better mexies I have heard of.

It actually all depends on what is represented in the market-- and what has been. I'm not questioning your source-- as there are many way to skin a cat/interpret research-- but my studies have shown a good following in younger males of the "classic rock that really rocks" stuff (and we're talking, ironically, tunes the uppers might be a bit sick of), and the same of the older end trending toward Godsmack. Of course this will differ market to market & history will ultimately show what the 35 yr old wants to hear. My opinion is a majorly current rocker will fail from lack of material. Hey, it's the times!

I think salvation for the 35-er is Nirvana, PJ & STP-type stuff. You'll need a decent representation of HAIR to sustain-- used to get kicked around by the young 'uns, but that's not even as true now. Hell, who doesn't like Paradise City?!

I have been suprised more than once by youth's affinity for the classics (and we must consider the levels of classic: REALLY old = Zep/Hendrix/Floyd; Middle-of-the-road = Motley Crue/Skid Row/Def Lep; Modern = grunge)... and by the mid-upper range's welcoming of newer stuff. Hell, in lots of situations a 20 year old LOVES Skynyrd, & Sublime, and a 30 year old LOVES Trapt, Linkin Park & Tool. Not all 35-ers are Carl from Aqua Teen (read hip youth reference).

Since Raleigh is a marketplace I've only entered a few months ago, it's would be overly arrogant of me to assume I know jacks#!t. It would be interesting to flip on the transmitter to a station that plays time-tested, top-scale active rock; has MAJOR *calculated* caller interaction... and broadcasts to an audience that either won't know how good it is til they get it-- or never really wanted it in the first place.

By the way. Can I borrow, like, 6 million dollars?

I think too much damn research is the reason WHY we've got this rock void now. "OH noooooo. A 40 year old guy wants ALL ZEP and Hendrix. He doesn't care what's new on the rock scene"....And that's crap. I'm not saying throw on your own personal ipod. But radio is slowly but surely moving away form the over analyzed, over researched, super narrow playlists.
Look at the top 10 Rock chart in R&R. Ozzy, Linkin Park, Rush, Velvet Revolver, Daughtry, Papa Roach, Finger 11, 3 Days Grace, and Breaking Benjamin...Ozzy, Rush, Velvet Revolver and Carolina boy Daughtry would be absolute slam dunks adds. You'd pick and choose from the others. Just a few currents and a couple recurrents would DRAMATICALLY freshen the sound of a station without watering down the product. Someone mentioned earlier that the new rock product just isn't that good anymore. I agree with that. Thats why you don't add new tunes just for the sake of adding new tunes or to schmooze record guys. OK....off my soapbox now

Re: Rock 103

I'm surprised no one mentioned Charlotte's 106.5 The End, but I guess this is a Raleigh problem everyone's trying to solve.

It's funny that they call it "New Rock" because some of that stuff is nearly 20 years old now. But it sure isn't like what the classic rock stations are playing.

I have neighbors, and I like the music on 106.1 ...
