Can anybody explain this?

The vehicle in question is a 2005 Ford Crown Vic that hadn't been driven for about a week due to 2 major snowstorms in the course of 3 days; nighttime temps going to to only 5-10 deg F at the most.
Problem: started the car, the stock car radio (AM-FM, cassette, CD) did not work. When turning it on the dial would illuminate to "12:00" and then cut off. Leaving the radio on, and driving for 5 min the radio played for a few seconds then cut off. This happened 3 or 4X for at about 20 min, then the radio started playing consistently and the clock moved to "12:01" and then some. Radio works fine now but it hasn't gotten cold again.
So it wasn't a fuse.
Did the internal components of the radio have to "warm up" or what?
This has never happened with any other vehicle that I've ever owned/driven.
By the way, these Crown Vics are real sweet. Great ride and gas mileage that exceeds EPA estimates for both city/hwy. And one can buy some great cassettes/CD's for $1 (or less).
What's funny is that I didn't mind the silence. But I'd rather have a working car radio.
So can anyone explain or give their opinion why the radio cut off? Thanks, vibe.

No-not being really mechanically inclined, what would muffler bearings have to do with the radio? The car is a 2005, 43K mi and the exhaust system seems fine. Thanks, vibe.

You guys are terrible! Why are you leading vibe on when you know darn well it's the kabunkulator valve.

It's probably a cold solder joint hidden by stable temps, but revealed with the near 0 temps. The cold caused the poor solder contact to contract and run intermittent till the vehicle warmed. It will probably run flawlessly for the next 43k mi until a cold snap.

Or, possibly a bad IC chip.

i will say them crown vics are awesome. and as the above said. prob a cold solder joint. (then again it could be a normal issue with the vic im not to shure) when im in the car, i got the ham radios on listing to that.

Ive had issues in the past when temps fell well below zero, and while my radio would play,, the LED display was all mucked up and the speakers sounded really funny cause they were all froze up.... After a half hour or so everything resumed to normal.

It sounds like they are manufacturing the radio with temperature sensitive components. More than likely - it is a defective radio and if your vehicle is under warranty I'd have it swapped.

Some of the wiring could also be bad - a connector that isn't making good contact with a wire. Some of that cheap auto wire is little more than steel with a little copper thrown in for good measure - great for weldable connections, not so good for soldering. A weld fractures, you get intermittant cold - I've had one intermittant hot. It usually takes a trip to an auto wiring specialty shop to track those things down.
