CAN CBS-FM GETS BETTER JOCKS?

The only real issue I have is with the voicetracked Jeff Mazzei and Lenny Bloch during overnights - and yes, it would be great if Max Kinkel took up that shift again. I would also love it if they found slots for Al Bernstein and Steve O'Brien. But other than that, I can't complain. Dan Taylor, Bob Shannon, Broadway Bill Lee, and Pat St. John are top-notch personalities. Ron Parker, Joe Causi, Sue O'Neal, and Rick Stacy aren't quite on the same level, but they are still capable jocks that are well-suited to the format.

And for the record, they play 60s, 70s, and 80s music. They rarely if ever play anything from the 90s.

I can live with the music ('70s, '80s & '90s), but some of the jocks blow.

Wow, thanks for your expert analysis and thoroughly detailed insight that is quite obviously derived from your very own stellar accomplishments in radio broadcasting.

You nailed it! I'll take Max over Jeff & Lenny any time. Max is an all-star.

I have one complaint with Joe Causi. Every break he mentions "Brooklyn's own". Drives me crazy. I could see if he did it once per hour but every break is too much!

Thanks for pointing out my error. Yup, '60s, '70s & '80s. It was late in the morning. Sorry.

Correction...It should be the '60s, '70s & '80s.

It should be "get" instead of gets in the headline, too. Ready, fire, aim?

They ought to try and bribe some of the jocks out of the sunshine at K-EARTH/LA.....They've got a great jock line-up.

Plus CBS recently axed the very popular Bill Gardner from their KOOL outlet in PHX....He'd be a great fit in NY.

LA as a market pays better because the revenues are higher. And the cost of living is lower, and the taxes are oh, so much lower.

I just don't get it. People complained about CBS-FM in the early 00's. If flips to Jack, people are in uproar. After flipping back to oldies last year, most people are delighted. But, here we go again. More complaints. What do you want?

I totally agree...those who can are on the air...even if the flunkies here say they blow...too bad you don't have a radio station to blow on...those who can are on the air, those who can't are bashers. Get a life!

I'd say leave well enough alone. 'CBS-FM was gone for 2 long years. Thankfully, it's back! Sure, the older material (pre-Beatles) is no longer "center stage" on 101.1 , but it still is well recognized. In my book, 'CBS-FM is the "cream-of-the-crop" in broadcast radio (and now online). No, I'm not from New York, but I know how really important 'CBS-FM is for many people (myself included). Just leave well enough alone! I'm a great fan of 'CBS-FM from way back (since 1975)! BTW: I had a chance to meet "Broadway Bill" Lee last March during the IBS Convention in NYC. He's a great guy and true professional. While visiting NYC, I kept my radio set on 101.1 and never changed the station (except for Saturday Night Oldies on WABC with Mark Simone).

Joe Causi needs to stop puking! It sounds awful.

My only beef with Brian Thomas is his despicable decision to relegate Pat St. John to doing only Sundays. It's absolutely outrageous and unforgivable. He really is a despicable asshole. If I were Brian Thomas I would cement my power-house lineup by putting Broadway Bill Lee nights 7 to midnight, and make Pat St. John a full-timer 3-7 afternoon drive. Think about the powerhouse lineup that would be from Dan Taylor seguing to Bob Shannon and Bob Shannon seguing to Pat St. John. It's outrageous and unforgivable what Thomas has done and I will never forgive him for mistreating Pat St. John. Disgusting. Disgusting. Disgusting. I don't know Pat St. John but on his behalf I say to Brian Thomas I hope you get fired soon.

Maybe Pat St. John doesn't want to do more than one regular airshift a week, or is contractually prevented from doing so by Sirus? Besides, CBS is also keeping him busy doing voiceovers for the WNEW and WCBS-FM HD2 channels. I'd hardly say there's any mistreatment issue here.

I am also glad 101.1 WCBS-FM is back after not having it for 2 years as well. I've noticed since late fall/early winter that they act like they never left. "Still standing after 35 years.." Oldies originally came on board back in July 7th, 1972. Their 35th anniversary would've technically been last year. Given they came back 5 days after the anniversary date, there was no way to do that. It really should be their 36th anniversary but oh well. I wouldn't mind Bobby Jay doing a regular shift or be on the Radio Greats more frequently. If Randy Davis ever wanted to leave 99.7/107.1 The Breeze along the Jersey Shore to come back to WCBS-FM I would like that as well. Max Kinkel does belong on the overnight shift like he was previously. Al Bernie Bernstein I believe deserves a slot on the station as well as Steve O'Brien.

But we gotta be glad what have it back..as much as I'd like it to be the original oldies form playing 50s, 60s and 70s...we all can't have everything we want.

Some of them want Musicradio WABC back.
And I'm sure CBS could get Max.....if they wanted to.

WCBS-FM Version 2 is trying to ecnomize as much as possible. They are saving $ by voice tracking the overnights and having 5 hour shifts. They are minimizing the pre-1964 music to attract a younger audience. We can't have everything. I would give Brain Thomas and Maire Mason an A for bringing back the station.

As you probably know, the best way that CBS-FM needs to bring back those better jocks from the station that has been gone for two years are:

1. Bill Brown
2. Mike Fitzgerald
3. Mike McCay
4. Dan Daniel (aka Triple D)

And many of the jocks that has been gone for a long time:

1. Max Kinkel
2. Marc Summers
3. Bobby Jay

And please bring back the reverb, because I missed the reverb when it was on CBS-FM for many years when Joe McCoy was still around as PD. I always love to hear the reverb sounded on CBS-FM once again.

disney fanatic: I would've mentioned them but as I said above, what I even asked for was prolly too much as it is. They won't hire more of the veteran jocks. That'll bring back more older people that they don't want supposedely because they're useless to advertisers..which is a bunch of bs. I agree they should come back but CBS-FM would've already done so by now if that was the plan.

Um....the point of this board is to discuss radio, for good or bad. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if they're not an "insider" or do "on air" work (there's plenty of us behind the scenes that keep things going).

The truth is .... Rick Stacey and Jeff Mazzei, their voices and deliveries are mediocre. And the whole voice-tracking the overnight....come on, CBS....you can definitely afford to hire someone to jock the overnights.

Oh wait....CBS claims they're broke!!! I forgot!! They can't even afford a Blue Box. :) ::)
