Can I Buy A Vowel? 97.5 Could Be "The Voice"

I did a half-assed domain search by registrar, the name being "Greater Media Philadelphia". Though I would have to shell out 88 bucks to see the full report, the service was kind enough to show the first character of each of the domains under their registry, as well as an estimated number of characters, and the date the domains were created. The most recent of these results was a domain starting with "V" and had approximately 14 characters.

How many stations have names starting with V? Two that immediately come to mind are "Voice" (talk format) and "Venus" (female-leaning music, recently killed in Nashville). No domains found with Venus to fit the criteria, but I did find "voiceofphilly.com" was registered in July, which was the date that was shown on the search results. Currently, the site goes nowhere. Nor does an extensive whois search currently reflect Greater Media Philadelphia being the registrar - sometimes it takes time for such transfers to take effect...

Stay tuned... (Unless someone wants to spring for the 88 dollars...)

If Greater Media does indeed go with talk as "The Voice", wonder if they would try to pry the WVOI callsign away from a small AM in Marco Island, FL? Should prove interesting....

WVCE would be close to WVCH, but it could work. A Philly-flavored NJ101.5 clone would be a fun listen, but without the slam-it-to-the-wall audio and over-the-top reverb WKXW features. Would be a nice change from the dry bread on 990 and the in-your-face bleating on 1210. There's certainly enough talent in this market to make a go of such an idea. Were the calls indeed WVCE, you could use some of the old Drake jingles: Your Vo-oice! W V C E(sung)....

I believe the calls WVCE are available...

Yes, WVCE, that's the ticket, like WVCH, and then they can be the Voice of Chester! WOW! Think of it. Maybe they can even sign off at night and be just like a Day-Timer. Maybe muddy up the audio just a wee bit, and give it that genuine fuzzy tube sound of WPEN. And then just sprinkle a little over modulated pink noise in the background for a layer of that genuine I-Buzz flavor that you can never detune. WOW. What possibilities. Nothing over the top. Just what GM’s good at.

Starts with a V, 14 characters...how about...

VirginRadio975?

Virgin Radio is now on in Toronto, and supposedly it's coming across our border as well....don't count it out.

It's strictly a guess on my part, but what do I win if I'm right? I sure hope it's a T-shirt!

Good guess, but...

I just searched and all "virginradio" domains that contain a frequency that are registered are all under ownership by Canada.

Also "virginradiophilly.com" is not registered at this time.

Well, as another poster has taken that theory and created a new thread with it...

I will say this... If 97.5 indeed becomes "Virgin Radio" I have but three words for you:

Embrace the iPod.

too late. that's already happened. radio's been chasing people to alternatives like iPods for years now.

And if the thought of a knock-off of the ill-fated "Blink" format is a reality, this would be just another reason.

Then again, when you think about it, talk radio is always "new" and usually focuses on things happening "now".
