Can KIOX make it to Houston?

Has anyone tried to get KIOX in Houston? I just wondered since the ratings has them in the list, I know more than likely a table top radio wont be able to pick them up. Were they expose to move closer to Palacios on a taller stick along with KXGJ on the same tower? I saw that in the FCC data base, it was in Radio-locator, but then it went away, did the FCC dis aprove that?

It can not be in Houston because of KTHT. Not possible.

On 2nd note, the ratings has them in the list because it is a simulcast with KQQK, which has a rimshot signal from near Beaumont (think KIOL). Also, some small factors that may affect it is the Houston-Galveston market is by a county basis, not the cities of Houston and Galveston. Both Fort Bend and Brazoria counties are included in the Houston-Galveston market.

Listenable in the car outside the beltway on the southwest side. Even the boombox receives it out at my place in Katy.

I was meaning the station itself. Not the sensitivity of your recievers allowing it to come in.

One great thing about that HD Radio I have, it has a really good filter since KIOX is a very local station to me, that radio can filter that out and I can also recieve the country ledgends on 97.1 even with 96.9 being a very strong station. I was also able to get party 104.9 with KZAM being a local station. I'm thinking of buying another one of those radios.

KIOX makes it in to my Cy-Fair location with a fairly decent signal. Sister KXGJ is usually pretty weak, unless the tropo is kicking in.

Last I knew, both KIOX and KXGJ were to move to a 1500ft tower outside Bay City (just north of KXGJ's current tower site). KIOX was to be a C0 but with KXGJ being a C1, they would have to reduce power since it is still a C1 and must maintain the same contour limits. Not sure if that tower move ever took place. I know KIOX was on a taller tower than KXGJ already. But neither will probably ever have a better signal than they do now into Houston...They are NOT Houston stations and can never be (regardless of what Liberman does with them)

My Truck stereo is able to pick them up over in North Houston (Greenspoint Area-Bush Int Airport). KIOX has a very good signal. I also pick it up very clear over Navasota. KXGJ is another story.

KIOX has always had a better than average signal from its current tower plus with 97.1 being far enough on the north side, it doesnt bother them in car radios. The CPs were issued in 03 for the new tower for both AND the FCC issued a construction reminder in 05 for the new tower (that was approved in 04) but I dont see any movement on it.
Here is what KXGJ is supposed to have as 1mV coverage from the NEW tower:

It doesnt even get close to Houston......KIOX? Here is their proposed 1mV coverage:

KIOX 96.9 generally has a weak signal in The Galleria area, but usuable, but since they // KQQK 107.9 which has a good signal, I would listen to 107.9 first. I don't listen to either one very often. KXGJ 101.7 is a rare signal to hear without enhancement of other signals present.

Unless someone has seen a new tower well into the air out in Matagorda County on FM 1095 1.8km north of FM 521, which is about about 9.75km east of TX 35, I would say this is a dead project. The CP expires in July of '07. Liberman applied to upgrade all his rimshots to new towers, but I'm not aware that any are actually taking place.

If the upgrade is/was done KIOX might have a fair signal in Houston. Currently KIOX has a 36.4dBu signal over downtown, the upgrade would provide a 42.7dBu signal. Not usuable in most buildings, but should be a good signal on most vehicle radios.

Liberman DOES have a new 2000ft tower up in Devers for 98.5 and 107.9. They were shooting for 1-15 as on air date but I have not confirmed it active yet. I suspect they may build the new 2000ft for 103.3 next and eventually get around to the 1500 ft for KIOZ/KXGJ but I am not holding my breath on that one...KIOX has always had a decent car signal into SW Houston after they moved to the 1000ft they are on now....even before Liberman bought it.

is KIOX on a new tower or the same one as always?

From what I read on the FCC site, they are still on the same one as always....

KJOJ-FM 103.3 is still an Appliction. It is being held up by the crazy "birds are running into the towers along the coast and dying by the thousands" BS. The FCC just extended the time for people to respond to the whole mess for another three or six months. KJOJ-FM could be some time away from getting a CP for the new tower.

Maybe the KIOX/KXGJ tower will be built out next, if they haven't already started.

Yes, DAMN those bird lovers!
Will KJOJ move in closer to Houston or just extend their coverage to reach out farther?
I really don't think KJOJ can do much with KLTN on the way.

Mike O is not joking! Some idiotic group filed with the FCC and FAA asking for communication towers (which included broadcast sites as well) be stopped along the coastal areas because the lights "attract the birds to their deaths" or something like that (cant recall if they were saying all lights or just the white strobe types)! Funny, at all the tall and medium tower sites I have been at in my decades of being around them, I have NEVER seen any sighting of dead birds that the group alledged. Because of the complaint, all new tower construction along the coastal areas have been put on long hold...some sites have been allowed (I think replacements after Kat and Rita) but that has been it.
Wonderful huh? (I had a longer explanation typed and the d*#n laptop I am using has a touch screen and it deleted most of the typing!! ARGH!!!)....

That is BS. If they stop that, then they need to go and stop house building up where the Coyoties use to run around, they have had a problem in North Austin about that, and then I think they started shooting them and traping them. They dont seem to go after that kind of stuff. ::)
