Can Pulse 87 ask for listener donations?

Is Mega Media allowed to hold a radio-thon asking for its listeners to donate to help keep the station on the air? With the dance format's passionate fans, many would be willing to spare some change to keep Pulse 87. I know I would donate at least $100. Mega Media is in a lot of debt, and some of its financial statements leave me worried. Right now, the best "donation" I made was buying several thousand shares of MMDA when the price was less than a penny per share, and if I sell them today, I would have more than doubled my initial investment, which is pretty rare in today's economy.

Pulse can't legally hold a radio-thon since they are a commercial, for-profit outlet, even though they are under 92 but are technically a TV station.

If they were a non-comm (like WBGO), a religious outlet (like WFME), or non-profit/public radio (such as WBAI), they could do pledge drives. But not Pulse. The stock thing may be the way to go....but (and I'm just disclaiming things) if anyone is considering this, I'd talk with a broker first.

Sure. Heck, Clear Channel could ask their listeners to donate if they wanted. (I would imagine Pulse would have a lot more success!)

Your donations wouldn't be tax-deductable though.

Donate money to a radio station? That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. How about donating money to cancer research or a similar cause.

Well, it would help the broadcaster thats operating the station and getting no money to help keep the station especially internet stations. It all depends who owns the station and if they are already getting funds for it. Look at C 89.5 in Seattle, they've been doing pledge drives for years because people love the music and want the station to stay on the air. And there are some stations that also do drives for cancer and other charities too.

C 89.5 is a non commerical license. They must either run under writing spots (short blurps about businesses -- no call to action) or ask listeners for support.

There is nothing I don't think that stops someone like Pulse asking for donations but I don't know how many would give up up $$$ to support a commericalized station.

(Over here in Columbus Ohio before their LMA ended.. A progressive talk AM station was asking for listener donations while running commericals too).
