"Can Talk save FM?"

Radio Realists place your bets. I think people around here are getting burned out on some of these formats. Just like todays newspapers advertising folks are trying to come up with new innovative ways to sell ads the same can be said of radio station formats, you can do so much then like newspapers people just go some where else.

I do not. I do think that people are getting burned out on particular topics of discussion.

Compare it to music formats. Stations that play any sort of "vintage" music format, such as oldies, classic rock, or any other collection of music from yesteryear that use too narrow of a playlist run the risk of burning out their collection of songs played. Listeners won't get bored listening to music, but they will get bored listening to the same few songs over and over and over. Change the songs, and the audiences perk up again.

It's the same with news/talk. The same few subjects have been dominating the discussions for so long that they're getting as burned out as "Freebird" or "Stairway to Heaven" on a classic rock station. But that doesn't mean the entire format is burned out. It only means that the hosts need to come up with some new topics.

Like those owned by Clear Channel in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis.

A model for a strong FM talker is New Jersey 101.5. The smug liberals hate it. Politicians hate it. Jersey people like me love it.

I'm only familiar with News Talk 104.7 in Pittsburgh. I am a major fan of Quinn in the Morning, and have been for over a decade. Quinn and Rose have been doing an entertaining talk show since long before Clear Channel turned a failing smooth jazz station over to news/talk. But, once Quinn's show is over and they hit the syndication feed button, I hit my own station selection button.

I catch snippets of Beck, Rush, and Hannity. They are as boring as they ever were. As for 104.7's sports talk show, I'm eating dinner. And as for Michael Savage, that's when I'm watching television. I don't know what they have on overnight, as I am asleep.
