WWPR 1490 in Bradenton has posted a link from its sales page to a trade publication with the Sarasota-Bradenton ratings...

The Arbitron site does not list WWPR as a subscriber to the Sarasota book.

Legalities aside, I can't imagine why they would want to link to their station's 12+ share number, as it would seem to call into question their claim on the same page that they have "250,000 listeners."

Yes it is legal. It is no different than you posting a link to wwpr's website. Arbitron could bitch and send a C&D however in court the station would win in that case as there could be no damages shown by Arbitron as R&R is a free to the public website that advertisers could access anyway for the 12+ numbers. They also don't claim to have 250,000 listeners, their signal reaches 250,000 listeners. Of course I could claim my internet station potentially reaches millions of listeners even though it only reaches thousands.
 
That reminds me of a short one...

A while back I was speaking with an owner of a station who "could have" increased his daytime AM signal's power to 50k DA-D with 5 towers. He would have had to power down to 2500w at night with two towers, but stll would have had a nice lobe into Pinellas and most of Southern Hillsboro. Faced with having to purchase a large amount of new land and move his freq down by 10khz he sat and said. "Sure then I would have lot's MORE people who won't listen to my station". Made no sense to me then, but now I see his wisdom.

"Potential audience numbers are a fool's measurement. I can tell you that my newspaper has 4 million potential readers..Are you impressed?" So said Paul Paylon

King features Syndicate once sold newpaper advertising by claiming that it had the worlds largest circulation base and that could amount to several hundreds of millions of potential readers.

Meaning? Nothing! Going by that logic anyone who can breathe and has access to a quarter is a "potential reader"
 
Well... considering the programming they have now on 1490, I could understand why they'd accept reducing power to HALF of what it had been since 1972...(500 watts down from 1,000 ND full time)

Valerie from WTMY -1280 - Sarasota is apparently helping her brother, who has the LMA for the station...

The tower they are using is an old back up tower (120') that the Nelson's had kept up at the origional WBRD / WDUV transmitter site.(2100 blk of 26 Ave. E. -Samoset) When they moved WBRD and WDUV to Palmetto, they kept back ups for everything...studios were kept there until a fire destroyed just about everything...Apparently they had the OK to run on that location @ 1,000 watts ND in case their main txmtr. ever went down...Same for the 500' stick in the back for WDUV... they even had 2 b/u txmtrs for 103.3... 100,000 and the old 26,000 origional txmtr... Bobby Nelson (Robert W. ) was a tinkerer and usually had all the latest toys... Hard to believe he's been gone for nearly a year now... Old man Nelson (Robert R. ) is now in his 80's..

enough of MY rambling... Ah,... radio when it was FUN and stations still made money, though we rarely saw any of it...

Do you remember when WDUV's RCA Amplifuzz tranmitter caught fire in Palmetto and took that location down for months. WBRD stayed on the air all thru the fire in the same room until the Fire Dept cut the power to the building. WDUV was glad to have the backup facilities now... I see the new studio is now Firkins Used car lot

Yeah, the fire didn't cause as much damage to the transmitter as the Halon extinguishing system did, getting into everywhere... Practically had to completly rebuild the transmitter... after cleaning it all...

I can also remember when WBRD'studios were actually in the Downtown Cabana Motel..just south of WTRL's old locale - Memorial Pier..( Now an assisted living facility ..) back to the Samoset location,when I first worked for them in the mid 1970's) Then to the 1st street location ( studios WERE pretty nice ) ...and Bob Keehn did a LIVE DJ remote show from the window @ the Belk-Lindsey store in Cortez Plaza...

WTRL was another story... termites got so bad when I was working the 6-12 mid shift,(1971-1972) that when swarming, they would actually get caught unter the needle, and skip the record to the next cut on an album... Morning man Lowell W. Schomaker and I had a board with a running total of the dead termites taped up on it...

But again... we were young, and had a lot of fun...

WOW you just gave me a blast from my 70's era past... Lowell Schomaker - he was at WQSA/WQSR in the mid 70's. Is he still in this area?
