Can two stations in a market carry ESPN radio?

Up until Christmas, we had two SNR affiliates here in Jackson. It was that way for over two years.

There is an ESPN affiliate here, but there's also one in nearby Hazlehurst/Brookhaven that puts in a pretty good car signal. I remember someone posted in the past that ESPN Radio has a 40-mile "protection" zone in which ESPN will not allow an affiliate within 40 miles of another. I'm assuming they mean 40 miles within a station's transmitter or city of license..

Golden Boy, you are correct about ESPN's protection zone. And while they use the mileage as the gauge for that zone, it would be nice if they would actually pay attention to signal strength instead...just because two AM stations are 30 miles away from each other on a map does not mean their signals overlap.

What I'm wondering, and possibly the original poster is wondering, is -- if ESPN is on an AM station and an FM signal opens up, will ESPN allow itself to be on both the AM and FM? We have a situation in central PA right now that prompts the question in my mind.

They do here in Southern California, with O&O KSPN and KLAA, owned by the Angels. The two stations have a partnership of sorts, whereas KSPN simulcasts selected Angels games from KLAA (KSPN's 710 AM frequency has carried Angels games on and off since the team's 1961 inception), and KLAA carries all other ESPN Radio programs not cleared by KSPN; KSPN is all-local from 10am to 8pm weekdays.

Replying to LauroJim....WNBH is licensed to New Bedford MA, while WLKW is licensed to Providence RI. And yes, both carry ESPN and are owned by Hall Communications Inc.

@Sprtschik, how well is 1340am and 1450am signals around Providence area (day and night?)
Last time I went to that area (Newport, RI) was around 2001, or 2002? one of those years. back then 1340am/1450am was Urban AC (ABC Radio Network Classic R&B Format which is no longer) and also which is now Citadel Media Networks.
Anyways, back then, when I was on my way to Newport, in Brockton, Ma I picked up both 1340am, and 1450am (1450am had more static) this was in the daytime. As I got closer to Providence, I changed it to 1450am which had a better signal. I got both in Newport, both were staticky but still listennable there. I was driving using a Car Radio with a good antanna (Jeep)
How about now? Anyone knows how 1340am and 1450am signal is?

There are two ESPN stations in Indianapolis. WFNI has the main affiliation, but WXLW carries "The Herd", Scott Van Pelt, and Doug Gottlieb. XL950 carries YSR the rest of the time.

WAXY 790 AM and WINZ 940 AM are both ESPN affiliates in Miami. 790 carries Cowherd, 940 carries Mike and Mike in the morning and SVP as well.

Never did quite see the deal with that. Maybe ESPN looks at it and says, "At least this way, we get more programming out to the LA market" and maybe that helps them money wise.

It was a very specific set of circumstances that made this one work:

KSPN preempted a lot of ESPN national programming to carry LA-specific local sports talk, leaving much of ESPN Radio's national lineup uncleared in market #2.

KLAA had a weak roster of non-play-by-play programming and needed more programming to fill the non-Angels dayparts.

KSPN didn't have much in the way of local play-by-play.

And most critically - neither KSPN nor KLAA is a full-market signal, especially at night. As much as the Angels have tried to position themselves as a "Los Angeles" team, night games on KLAA were hit-and-miss anywhere north of southern LA County.

This deal fixed all those problems at once: ESPN got its national lineup cleared in LA, KLAA got better programming to air during the day, and the combination of KSPN and KLAA for play-by-play made the Angels games listenable in pretty much the whole market.

Yep, that's pretty much the reason...it helps KLAA gain somewhat more of an identity in the market besides Angels and Ducks games, and the Mothership gets all of its programming cleared here in LA-LA-land.

Scott outlined the reasons very well; prior to KLAA picking up ESPN Radio programming, much of its programming (beside Roger Lodge's God-awful morning show and drive-time sports talk) was brokered talk.
