Can We Eliminate 'Reality' From TV Programming Descriptions?

There is nothing 'real' in most of these contrived fantasy matchups of society losers. At best they are something akin to game shows. At worst they are duplications of WWE phony-thons.

Survivor, the original 'reality' show, started off with a good idea and plopped a group of people on an island, didn't feed or water them or shelter them from weather, and just let the cameras run. If there was much puppetry going on behind the scenes it was largely invisible.

Fast forward to this season's "Fans vs Favorites" and you'll see something entirely different. Although still using the same name and basics as season 1, the backstage manipulating is very evident and smacks of producer involvement in staging conflict and competitive set-ups to try to make the natural competition more interesting.

Other shows of this ilk have been unabashedly manipulated from the get-go (Big Brother comes to mind as the worst of the worst).

The label 'reality' might well apply to old shows like Candid Camera but I can't think of anything that comes close today.

I don't know what the name of this genre should be in a perfect world but it is definitely not 'reality'.

In a perfect world, none of these shows would exist. The whole point of watching television, besides catching up on news and weather, is to take a break from reality.

Take any curse word and put -ity at the end of it, that's what I would call this so-called "reality" genre.

I nominate "stupid" or "brainless" or "avoid like the plague"

I've always enjoyed "America's Funniest Video's" as a true reality show.

Hmmmm. I thought that was what "Leave It To Beaver" was. ;D
