Can WTQR bounce back?

Many in the Triad of North Carolina have listened to WTQR for years, and for a long
time, they were #1 almost every ratings book, but have the listeners of this station
began to tune out because they grew wiery and wanted something different?
The management has to be concerned, which means changes will come soon.

They are DONE! It is OVER, FINITO BURRITO! They have no plan "B" and no backup from (the new) Clear Channel. Entercom just drank your milkshake, b i tche$!

I have to agree with Ditto. Everything Morgan Bohanan has touched turned to crap in just two or three years. They're in trouble in Greensboro, Raleigh and Charlotte--and Ditto is right that help isn't on the way. More cuts and lower revenues are all that are on the horizon. Look at Bohanan's region and you will see all you need to know about what went wrong with the Clear Channel master plan. Tex Meyer was a great manager in the 80's and 90's but he can't fix this mess. Entercom stared right into the eye of the market leader, ate their lunch, then crapped them out.

Hey Morgan let's go tee 'em up! That's something we know you are really good at.

Bravo, Hourly! Couldnt have said it better myself. Bohannon was the beginning of the end for this CC region. What a total waste as a manager. It's amazing to me that he has been allowed to go on and on unchecked and even get promoted! He's able to fake it good enough that those at the top haven't caught on to just how bad a manager he is. The man doesn't have an original thought in his head, drinks like a fish, feels threatened by any one with knowledge, and will sever the head of anyone who gets in his way. It's a cryin' shame and CC corporate should be embarassed that they let it happen.

Guys- a .1 win isn't exactly a landslide. What's intriguing is that for all the $$$ Entercom's laid out this year against CC's modest response, only a .1 win...there could easily be, and likely is, more wobble than that in this book. I'd wait a couple more books before we bury ole 'TQR.

Maybe it isn't a wobble. Hard to say for sure, what with all those other folks in other threads saying this book is junk. One thing IS for sure, a 3 or 4 book rolling average will be a lot more believable.

WTQR's fatal mistakes:

1. They did not take The Wolf seriously.
2. They did not change the way their playlist or imaging to compete.
3. They did not get rid of the Morning show and replace it with something real people could relate to.
4. They did not take The Wolf seriously.
5. Terrible management.
6. They never saw it coming.

umm...numbers 1 and 4 are the same thing.

;D So is #7..They didn't take the WOLF seriously!

You must be a CC employee.

That was my point.

Good eye BIG APE !

That's Jeff Roper on line 3, TQR. He wants to be your morning guy. He'll be the country version of Wicker and he could have an impact, but he will piss everyone (listeners, management, advertisers) off inside of three years. Proceed with caution!

I want to add...

When The Wolf launched a year & a half ago, instead of saying, "What do we need to do here?", they sent their reps out in the market and said,"They are just stunting", "They won't last 6 months", "They are a joke!". What they should have been saying is, "Yes, we have some competition now and we are taking steps to answer the new challenge in the market."

The laugh is not on The Wolf. It is on WTQR. They are in real trouble here. You never underestimate your opponent. And you certainly do not ignore them.

I know that Ent reps went out and told their clients that WTQR was still a great station, but The Wolf was simply a new choice in the market for those who wanted something fresh to listen to in the country format. It was a great positioning statement. Life is about choices. We can all see that people are making the choice. Now the game Ent has to win will be keeping the product fresh and never resting on their laurels. I guess that could be added to the list of fatal mistakes by WTQR #8...Never assume you will always be the only game in town. It can change as easy as a station starts saying..."OLDIES IS DEAD" and begin with TK singing, "How do you like me now..."

I don't necissarily think a heritage station like TQR should jump up and down when a new competitor comes in. They are still the big dog on the porch here. There's a difference in taking the new competition seriously...and making changes JUST to make changes. They sucked what little personality was left in the AM show, changed the music, and what happened?? They got beat. While .1 of a share in one book isn't the same as TAPS playing. there's definate cause for major concern.....I just wonder what TQR and CC will do now. They haven't ever been in this position. CC just cuts, cuts, snd cuts some more. Are the people in place capable of turning it around? Is it a wobble, or a decidely downward slide? Will the blow up the morning show? Toby's been mailing it in for years...Do you get rid of some of that "heritage"??? Does that even matter anymore? It's gonna be interesting. Thats for sure

That has worked for them in the past. Wonder why it DIDN'T work this time? ??? Oh well, I guess some will have start working now and not live on past glory. Welcome to the real world.

No one is saying they should have jumped up and down when The Wolf launched in the Triad. But the arrogance they sprayed throughout the market was only matched by their refusal to admit they had some competition. NOW is when someone needs to be jumping up and down ! And I am sure someone is from corporate all the way to the local SM for the station.

You cannot live by the ratings, nor can you die by them. I think Ent has done a remarkable job stepping up to TQR. They did it at the right time, with the right idea and followed through with the delivery. And they continue to do so. WTQR's wake-up call had better be answered by someone...

ABC...PAW should be proud of their accomplishment. But gloating now might come back to haunt them. Don't forget that it took 93 a year and a half of their best efforts just to catch the market leader, who did relatively little to fend off the attack. In the eyes of the buyers, 93 is not much better off than it was 6 months ago. To an agency buyer, a .1 difference means little...both stations get in on the buy, with TQR getting the nod due to market longevity. While PAW is spending a large portion of it's profits to fight the battle, TQR just cashes the checks. PAW has a VERY long row to hoe before it can rightfully claim the country market in the Triad. And that will happen only if CC decides not to take up the battle. Remember that CC has been for sale for the better part of the past year, and no company spends money on a property that's being sold. Now the sale is done, and the new owners are well financed- and privately held...things just might get real interesting in the days to come. And no- I'm not a CC employee, never have been, just a realist with some history in the biz.

Here's your realism: TQR is dead and they have no plans to warm up the body. She's gone. Better learn haow to say she's gone. You'd pay the devil to replace her.

WHAT WENT WRONG???

Put back WTQR's D/C automation Great American Country 24/7. Their "talent" is stale and out of date. WTQR is no cash cow thanks to the creative CC :(

ABC Girl is just a bit too gleeful in her gloating! I can tell you that not every ENT salesperson was so righteous in what they said to advertisers. I'm sure you'd like to believe they were all taking the high road, but that really is NOT the case. In fact, I think management at ENT would cringe if they heard some of what I've heard from advertisers.

I'm no fan of CC, but I wouldn't count WTQR out. WPAW has NOT won the total game. This is a battle that will continue for a while, and ENT is impatient. Look at the money that has been spent on advertising there. Corporate will expect that investment to pay off big time. Kudos to them for making the investment, but the more that's spent, the more they'll want in return. What happens if Country music has a dip in popularity like it had 5 or 6 years back? What if another format looks like the hot new thing? I don't think ENT is patient enought to stick it out.

If WTQR gets a hot new morning show and the new owners put some money into promoting it, the tables could turn in a hurry. There's a LONG heritage at that station and there's still a lot of life there. WPAW may have just wakened the sleeping giant. Watch out.
