Can you get the BBC world service on SW over there?

Yes, I know the official World Service shortwave transmissions for North America ended many moons ago.

In practice, though, can you pick up the BBC world service over there?

Absolutely. I'm listening to their Singapore relay on 9740 right now (1425Z). It fades a bit, but it is quite audible on my Grundig Satellit 750 with an indoor antenna.

Thanks Keith. Where abouts (obviously only very roughly) are you?

The 9740 morning East Asia relay is heard here, in Western WA, most mornings. Around 1400-1800 zulu the 31, 41 and 49 meter bands come to life with Asians. Sometimes domestic CNRs can be heard.

I've heard them once or twice since NA service shut down. I'm assuming it was aimed at South America, unless they still target the Caribbean. I didn't bother to look it up.
They stopped targeting America as a whole several years ago, cancelling the Caribbean programming in the progress. I'm in Buenos Aires and I can hear them on several frequencies like 12095 and 6135, the latter jamming Radio Santa Cruz badly.

Eduardo, I have an unrelated queston: Have the 60/90/120 meter South American broadcasters of old left the air now? All I hear on 60 & 90 nowadays are American religious broadcasters and R. Havana, and nothing at all on 120.

I have seen people on the DX Electronic Digest by Glenn House reporting many stations from Brazil, Peru and Bolivia, but they're too low power for me to listen to them. The only station I get on 90m are Radio Mosoj Chaski from Bolivia and Radio Sonder Grense from South Africa. On 60m, only VOA from Botswana, and nothing on 120m.

All I can get from down that area is LRA36.....Just kidding. ;)

Yeah, they've stopped targeting quite a few places, including Europe and Russia. In fact it's probably easier to list where they do still target- Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

I get it in Ottawa on SW and sometimes it's amazingly clear. I just use a Grundig G8 with the supplied antenna.

I get the 15400 KHz service for Africa fairly regularly on my shortwave car stereo driving home from work. Steady signal but some dropouts.

Here in eastern Ontario, I can (still) get the BBC WS, over a number of frequencies, during certain times of the day. The usual source is from Ascension Island.

As I type, I'm hearing them, with a good signal from Ascension, on 11810 kHz (1800-2100 UTC) & 15400 kHz (1500-2100 UTC). As well, I am currently hearing them -with weaker, but listenable signals- on 9410 (Mahe, Seycelles), 9430 (Woofferton, UK).

I've heard the Chinese domestics, here in eastern Ontario, as well. The commercials they carry, make them easy to pick out from the Manderin CRI service. In fact, I'm receiving -a very poor- signal from CNR1's 100 kW Beijing transmitter right now, on 11710 kHz.

Don't forget the Firedrake jammer of Chinese music! I've heard them god knows how many times in the past, usually in the mornings. Not as common anymore but years ago they used to jam every Radio Free Asia and RTI relay there was. Plus, when the band would open up to East Asia on 19 and 16m, I even heard Firedrake up there, around 17.760 (where VOA Chinese operated).

That 11710 transmitter is quite annoying at night, since it jams Radiodifusión Argentina on the same frequency :-\

I do receive BBC via Kranji/Singapore usually fair here in Phoenix Arizona. I believe I have heard them via Limassol also, but I'd need to check.. I do know that Kranji was not the sole transmitter Ive received them.

Hearing the 17830 Ascension Island transmitter in Southeastern AR at 1235 UT (7:35am CDT), but its weak with fading on a Yaseu transceiver and 75m dipole. Nothing like the days when the BBC WS could be heard on the crappiest of cheap SW radios in Arkansas.
