Can you hear "The Mighty 1190" in Dallas?

Years ago, the station was the legendary top-40 KLIF, of course.

After years of format changes -- the last Fox Sports Radio -- all summer it has been playing what it calls "Rock 'n Roldies" -- a huge playlist of songs from the 1950s to today. Prior to that, the station stunted for weeks with All Beatles, All the Time.

And it is one of the few on the AM band playing music of course. The other is KMGS, known as "Smokin' Oldies", a mixture of R&B and soul from the '60-'90s.

770 AM here plays standards and 620 is Radio Disney.

Both stations announce that they will be commercial free through the summer.

1190 is 50,000 watts day, 5,000 watts night directional.

Just curious if anyone has DXed it and thought it sounded weird -- or good -- to hear music on the AM band again.

I get it on a fairly common basis here in Alabama. It was always an easy catch when it was sports as well. Are the calls still KFXR? It's a great-sounding station.

KXJK 950 is a 5000w in Forrest City, AR. It's in my opinion the best sounding AM music station in any small town in the country. BTW, I've never worked there or know anyone there.

KXJK is a great little station. I hear it in the daytime in Memphis. It's like the consolidation of the 90's never happened there. They still have live/local news at the top of the hour! The music flows pretty well, it's almost like they do blocks of three songs from each decade they cover (60's, 70's and 80's) and play rock, soul and pop.

KFXR is still the call latters for Mighty 1190. I've got an aircheck of it, but I can pick it up around sunset before the pattern change. Great idea! Music on AM! After sunset 1190 turns to WOWO. Around sunset I can get the 1160 in Dallas playing all Motown too.

Of course, I'm in Memphis so we've got WDIA.

I've never been able to get Dallas on 1160. WBOB and WYLL scream in from the north with the heavy conservative message most nights. WAMB, WMET, KSL, and the Puerto Rican station also come through on occasion. What was it before becoming an R&B station?

Yes, still KFXR.

Early on, during the All-Beatles stunting during the spring to just before Memorial Day, the "ID" was KFXR, Dallas, Fort Worth, Liverpool.
 
Nothing was on 1160 in Big D before "Smokin' Oldies"

Actually nothing was on 1160 before "Smokin' Oldies"

First Broadcasting got the frequency moved from 1150 AM to 1160.

Years ago, 1150 was KVIL-AM, the sister station to KVIL-FM, another famous Dallas station.

After KVIL-AM was sold, various formats were tried including all-traffic, business news, and Hispanic-oriented music formats.

But 1150 was restricted to only 6 watts after sunset obviously limiting its range -- thus the move to 1160 AM.

Right now, both 1160 and 1190 are commercial free through Labor Day, and most expect the stations to be sold and the music to end sometime after that.

Neither station has shown up in the Dallas-Fort Worth 12+ trends.
