Canada's got talent aired today in Canada (Sunday March 4, 2012) at 8pm, up against TWO MAJOR American shows.
The Apprentice and the Amazing race. How's that for GUTS!!!!

Except that the show aired on Citytv, which is not quite a national network, whereas Global (The Apprentice) and CTV (The Amazing race) are.

Do they usually shut it all down when there's that many great American programs on the other networks?

It's pretty much always been that way. Of course there are exceptions but by and large Canadian based shows outside of their news and sports are complete garbage. Border cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Windsor/London have always enjoyed a bit of both with their CBC and our big 3. Instead of incurring the expense of producing shows in house it's cheaper just to buy the airing rights of our shows, simsub in their commercials and lean back and let the money roll in.

It also doesn't help that about 3 telcos own virtually 100% of the entire cable, internet and mobile distribution up there and they are complacent in doing nothing more than to gouge their customers and roll US produced shows which takes zero effort. Over the air broadcast is about as non-existent as it gets up there, so if you want tv either pony up to the telco or move closer to the border and pull in US OTA.

If you think media conglomerates are a nuisance in the US, Canada has it much much worse.

Flashpoint, Rookie Blue, and Lost Girl are definite exceptions. I'm also one of the 13 people who watched The Bridge on CBS the one or two Saturday nights it aired.

Sorry, I DID mean to say "How's that for guts?!!" I guess I accidentally left out the ?.

Anyway, yes, I'm so used to the "Sim Sub" being the norm in Canada.
It's shocking to me when a Canadian station decides to compete with two BIG shows using something that is NOT competing in the States for ratings.

Interesting how they chose to air the show Sundays at 8, but yet, Mondays, the show airs at 7pm!

Maybe to make room for "Alcatraz", though it seems it's not simsubbed in most areas (it airs on Citytv at 8PM in Toronto, while it's on Fox at 9PM).

That could be, but I've also learned that Monday's 7PM airing is a repeat of Sunday night's show!
Perhaps Mondays are the back up plan if they fall flat on their face?

Sunday night is a VERY busy night for TV as is. I didn't think there was any room for something outside of a Sim Sub (or an American repeat program) on the Canadian side.
