At least in Canada, the "Idol" phenomenon appears to have "legs". According to this CTV press release, the finale of "Canadian Idol 3" this past Wednesday evening (September 14th) actually drew a slightly larger audience than the finale of "Canadian Idol 2", accoriding to BBM statistics quoted by CTV.
CTV estimates that one-sixth of Canada's total population watched at least part of the finale.
If my memory serves me correct, the "Canadian Idol 2" finale drew the largest viewing audience of any Canadian-produced entertainment program in the history of Canadian television.
BTW, the CTV press release also reported that minutes after being told she had won the competition, "Idol" winner Melissa O'Neil got a phone call from Prime Minister Paul Martin (not being in Canada or a border area within reach of a CTV station, I don't know if the phone call was on the air or backstage after the show ended). But perhaps the Prime Minister wasn't just sending his congratulations; maybe he in the back of his mind decided that doing this might help his standing with younger voters in advance of a possible future election.
