One little typo to report on the above list. CICK 93.9 in Smithers, B.C. has applied to increase power from 5 watts to 50 watts (not 500).

Winnipeg is a lesser place for it.

ON Kemptville 97.5 CKVV AC (FM 97.5) (Haliburton)

No one in Kemptville knows about it yet...

ON Collingwood n/a new Will become CFMO (Evanov)

CFMO...now there's a historic call sign which I still miss.

ON Collingwood n/a power n/a (Classical) (MZ Media) (will partially simulcast CFMZ 96.3 Toronto) (must find a suitable frequency within 90 days as the applied frequency of 104.9 is not available)

They'll be happy up there. No rating figures yet? It could throw a really nice signal, with a transmitter on the escarpment, next to the Georgian Bay....

ON Brockville 91.9 CBOB-cp The CBC has until November 10, 2012 to get this new Radio One Service on the air. This is the final extension to be granted by the CRTC

I really hope the CBC doesn't make the cut. We really don't need yet another CBC rebroadcaster here in eastern Ontario.

LOL,...it's pretty crowded in the GTA, so if a frequency opens up, it becomes a feeding frenzy...

Thanks for the info, Dan!

e-dawg asked:
What are you predictions for the 88.1 frequency? Will Ryerson University get their station back?

It's just too overwhelming to make a prediction. My first thoughts were that one of the Triple A applicants might get the go ahead as there is a hole in the Toronto market for that format, plus in recent years the CRTC seems to have become very "pro-Triple A" when awarding licences. However most of those new Triple A stations have gone on to become failures, so I just don't know.

As for Ryerson getting their station back.....anything is possible. The CRTC might just be dumbfounded by all these applications, simply throw their hands in the air and just give it back to Ryerson. Of course that would make this whole chain of events nothing more than an exercise in futility.

Let's have some more predictions and thoughts from you guys.

88.1 FM in Toronto could spin in any direction.
I'd prefer to see the frequency maintained as a Community station, (run by ANY community radio source, not just Ryerson)

Keeping my mind open, I would say perhaps Larche might get the Triple A format. (agreeing with what's already been said, filling a hole in the market.)
I'm also guessing their pitch includes a 40% Can Con promise.
The thing that makes me a little nervous is that, if that format fails, they might simply become the next Rawlco of Toronto, selling their station to another Toronto market company.

What I hope is that it doesn't become a nested repeater for CHIN, CJBC, or CFZM. There would be no net gain of radio stations in Toronto if one of those gets awarded.

Other than that, I don't really care who gets the license, as long as there isn't yet another Top 40 station.

Now hold on just a minute...Astral has their name thrown in, but they are making an exit...Bell is buying Astral Media. Will Bell honor that request and continue on? OR withdraw from the list of stations fighting for use of 88.1 FM???

Dan said:

How about a double move?

Say, for example, 88.1 is granted to CIRR; and, one of the other applications is granted contingent on finding a new frequency. (that frequency presumably being 103.9)

Is CHIN(AM)'s nested repeater going to count against their application? Apparently it doesn't count as an "FM station" as it would be a blatant violation of the two-to-a-band regulation, but will the CRTC still consider it in a competitive proceeding like this?

I would like to see G 98.7 move to 88.1. That frequency change would really boost their audience. Or, if that doesn't work, I would like to see AAA come to the T-Dot. Something that's not ALL contemporary pop. Toronto has A TON of those stations already, both in the city, and surroundings. As for the other formats, I don't think so.

I don't think Astral can even apply for a new station. They already own 97.3 and 99.9, so it couldn't work. I think Newcap is what you may be referring to.

For Astral, it would fall under the "repeater loophole". They came across as wanting to repeat CFRB, for the reasons that be. NOT launch a second talk station.

For example, if Durham radio inc wanted to launch another Oshawa FM station, they might perhaps be granted something (if available) because 107.7 is only a repeater of their AM station.
(keeping on mind that KX96 is NOT an Oshawa station, it's an AJAX station.)

What about the Business News by Channel Zero? I think that would be great

Hopefully, if they get that license, they can have a better go at it than the short-lived CFBN 1280. The problem that station had was a very small signal centered around YYZ.

Hopefully, if they get that license, they can have a better go at it than the short-lived CFBN 1280. The problem that station had was a very small signal centered around YYZ.

The reason being is that the Greater Toronto Airports Authority owned the station, which was initially established as an airport information station. In 2007, they had the bright idea of presenting business news, as well as broadcast shows featuring American right-wing hosts Dennis Miller and Glenn Beck, all alongside airport information. You know how well that went -- the station closed down before the end of 2007, and its license was walked (or flown) back to Ottawa in January 2008.

Well I still say business news should stay on AM.
Let AM do the talk and FM do the music.
Keep on mind, if business news were a great idea for Toronto, AM 640 would be all over that!
They won't have hockey for much longer.
I thought Bell was going to buy AM 640 and move 1050 there.
It's hard to say what's really going on now!

This Blog predates the Bell purchase of Astral Media:

How does News/Talk, All News, and Sports formats do in Canada? I know CBC Radio One is on FM in all the major markets, but any FM Allnewsers, Talkers, Hot talkers, or sports talkers?

CHMP 98.5 is the top-rated station in French Montreal, n'est-ce que pas?

Other than that, not much FM news/talk action in Canada yet; the only ones that come to mind are Rogers' trio of "FM News" stations in the Maritimes.

That's because it's still illegal to do News/talk on FM in most of Canada.
