I know that full power tv in Canada was required to go digital in 2011 I still see listings for Candaian stations listed online for the Detroit market. They are not listed as 40.1 or 40.2(those are just numbers for example) they are just listed as 36 or 39(again examples only).
I will be spending a few weeks in Detroit want to bring my old trusty Coleman camping tv with if I can pick anything. Are LP and CA stations like in the USA still exempt from the digital transition?
If so can you still recieve these stations in the Detroit or Toledo markets?
First, I must acknowledge that the "Canada TV" thread would have been better for this post, the moderator may move it there.
Canadian ATSC signals will play on ATSC sets sold in USA and on US soil if the signal is usable. There is no "selective access" technology in use to block it.
In Canada, the digital transition was only mandatory in certain markets (even some of the larger cities like Grand-Sudbury are not included). There are many low power and a few full power stations still on analog TV in Canada. Stations in voluntary markets are free to switch to digital when they feel like it. Global is gradually switching to digital in voluntary markets.
CBC, however, gutted their OTA transmitter network, shutting down transmitters even in some mandatory markets (especially minority-language stations, i.e., no CBC in Ville du Québec, and no SRC in almost any city outside QC). They shut down ALL analog transmitters (CBC is still on very few privately-owned affiliates). For the most part, if you're not in one of a few large urban areas, CBC TV is an expensive luxury.
As for Canadian DTV in the Detroit-Windsor region, CBC is available in HD on 9.1. The actual RF channel is 9, so you will need a VHF-capable antenna to see it. TVOntario also has a decent signal on 32. The others (16 CTVTwo and 22 Global) do not have strong signals on the US side. There is no longer any SRC in the area (digital nor analog), and, AFAIK, no legal means to watch SRC in the USA.
