Candi from B96

What happened to her? I heard her on Kiss 103.5 for a brief second with Silly Jilly, and I noticed she is no longer on the B96.com website.

B 96 cut her due to major staff cuts at CBS. Roxanne is leaving shortly as well being replace by a new DJ called J-Nice sometime in early May. B 96 did not renew Roxanne.

While I think Candi sometimes was annoying, she and Roxanne brought heritage listeners to that station. They will never learn. I still think it was a mistake letting Brian Middleton go. They could have used him in a old skool mix show capacity that Love FM currently does now for like Sunday evenings or something. It would have brought tons of ratings to the station.

And they wonder why their ratings are not as good. They had one thing Kiss never had.... Heritage jocks and listeners loyal to them. Now that they ruined that, oh well.

I'm a little confused by your post, princessdj. B is too ghetto? B96 is a Ryhthmic CHR, according to Aribtron, and rather recently, they've become very pop friendly.... Jordin Sparks... Miley Cyrus.... Jesse McCartney...

Target Cume? They are one of the highest cuming stations in the city.... both general 12+ and in-demo as well.

Could you clarify?

Brian -

I'm trying to figure out your post. You say Candi was "sometimes annoying" but B96 should have kept her because she was "heritage"?
"Heritage" is not as important for a station appealing to teens and 20's. It can be thought of the station that their parents listened to, in other words, "NOT COOL."

B96 never even mentioned their 25th anniversary on the air for that reason. NewsRadio 780 on the other hand, is making a big deal about their 40th anniversary, they appeal to an older audience who might appreciate that.

Mario,

Interesting you say that. Why does B 96 have "Killer Bee" Fridays where they play their heritage dance/party music of the 90s at 5 pm?

I personally don't like Candi as a DJ even though I respect she spent about a decade with one station. I guess I should have more clearly seperated my opinion of her from my opinion of why this is not a good move by B 96. Same thing with Brian Middleton and Tim Spinnin Schommer.

Wouldn't you as a station want to keep that same listener who grew up with your station at the age of 12 all they way up til their mid to late 20s? Many of the 20 year olds now grew up on Candi, Roxanne, Brian and Tim. When you remove them when they did not go by their own power and the audience finds out, it kind of alienates them hence the drop and soon to be more of a drop in ratings.

I am sure many pre-teen and teen's parents if they are in their 30s or maybe early 40s listened to Eddie & JoBo when they were their age and the ratings are still not terrible. Perfect example against your arguement. I think more people listen to Eddie & JoBo still because of how long they are in the market no matter how old they are.

Biggest mistake was taking Roxanne off afternoon drive when she was consistently top 5 in the afternoons and they have led to other not so smart moves. I don't think Styles and Roman are holding up the rating she kept.

B 96 has heritage over Kiss but when they make moves like letting Candi and Roxanne go it is like shooting yourself in the foot without the competition having to do anything.

Kiss is laughing at B since they signed Candi especially if they use her properly. I just don't think it is a good move especially when you are now 2nd fiddle to the other CHR station.

Thanks for your reply Brian -

I agree with much of what you said (I don't think much of Styles and Roman either). But since we both think Candi is "annoying" maybe B96 kept her 9 years too long.
And let's wait and see how this J Nyce guy is. Perhaps he's just being placed on Midday to "audition" him to replace the boys in the afternoon (we can only hope.)

My 2 cents. B96 traditionally has had a lot of radio liner jocks, not radio air-personalities. My assumption is that this is probably due to the direction the PD chose for the station - talk breaks short and one thought. That's why several jocks on B96 have been replaceable throughout the years. While most of them have been good jocks - there have been very few that developed into big time air-personalities and that is why their depature won't result in any significant listenership loss on B96. However, i did like Candi and i thought Roxanne was just so so. B96 will remain competitive especially when the electronic rating system enters the market offically.

The truth is that B96 is in a tough spot, and something has to change. The station needs a new image, and Eric and Todd are doing their best to put together a winning combination. It is clear that something over is broken, although you dont really know what the fix is until you stumble onto something good.

Julian I think was a good hire. I think he is one of the best night jocks in the city.

"Hits and HipHop..." I dont know about that one, but its different than anyone else's position, which makes it a good try at a brand.

Musically B96 sounds amazing right now.

J-Niice? I guess we'll have to wait and see about that one. We'll know by this time next year.

But if I were to take a guess at what they have up their sleeve, I would say that E+J are probibly done at the end of their contracts, leaving:
Mornings S+R
Middays new female hire
J-Niice PM Drive
Julian nights
OVERNIGHTS new female hire from another CBS CHR (by VT), or Jerzey (by VT)

Todd and Eric have never really done anything all that unpredictable (except hiring Julian). Pretty much every talent has come from within the building since forever and ever, so I'd say you could pretty much make bank on this.

Just my 2 cents. B96 lost their hispanic listeners a while back. In my humble opinion, they may have taken them for granted and when they lost them in the diary world - their numbers came tumbling down. That ethnic group, (hispanices), was keeping their numbers up throughout the '90s. However, a new game is about to be played in the new electronic measuring system PPM.

I don't think Stylez and Roman are strong enough to make mornings happen. But, hey i have been wrong before. Musically, they're no different than any othe Rhythmic CHR in the country. However, with hip hop not as popular as it once was ... i wouldn't have it the slogan ... Chicago radio isn't what it use to be. :(

I use to work for B. They do not have 1 white person on air anymore. It has totally gone Latino or black.

They play "pop" to try and keep their #1 position and the only time you will hear "pop" is during working hours. [EDIT]

[EDIT-offensive content]

I'm not talking about hispanic staff members. I'm referring to hispanic listeners. They have lost hispanic listeners over the past several year. Viva La Kalle!!! lol ... I wish you all the success at B?
