"Candlepins For Dollars" On WB56

WLVI (a/k/a WB56) has announced the return of weekly candlepin bowling to over the air TV. "Candlepins For Dollars" will air Saturdays at 6PM, with the Saturday night show repeated on Sunday at 2PM. The show premieres on March 4th. WB56 weeknight news anchor Frank Mallicoat and Mike Morin, morning host on WZID radio in Manchester NH will be the show's hosts. Morin was one of the co-hosts of the "Candlepin Stars & Strikes" show on then-WNDS Channel 50 until it was cancelled by the new owners of Channel 50 in 2005.

Here is a link to the show's website, which includes a press release from WB56 announcing the show:

When I first saw the new show's title, I had visions of Bob Gamere. (LOL)
But that's not the format of the show, it will be using the "ladder" format that the old Channel 50 show used.

Two questions:

1)Will it be in Hi Def?

2)when do they tape the show?

I can't tell you if the show will be taped in HDTV, but the show's website now has taping dates listed.

Candlepin bowling shows have been popular in the Boston area for many years. The old Saturday noontime "Candlepin Bowling" on WCVB-5 ran almost forty years, and was the dominant program in it's timeslot for nearly all of that time.

I don't know if WLVI-56's new bowling show will become that popular, but it will certainly attract far more viewers than the programming WLVI now runs in that time period.

There's also "The $30,000 Candlepin Challenge" on the New England version of the CN8 cable network; it supposdely is far and away the most watched program on CN8 in the network's New England region.

I would have preferred the format of "Candlepins for Cash" to have returned. 7 Amateur Bowlers each try to get a strike to win the Jackpot. Now that seemed much more like a Game Show to me.

Knowing you're in or near Providence, remember when George Allen hosted a bowling show from Cranston on WTEV-6? I used to have to drag an Ampex 1200 up the ramp of a U-Haul to tape the show 'cause 6 was too cheap to pay the extra for a VTR in the van they rented outta Worcester (Coach Coltrane...WWLP).
T'was in that truck that I was one of several who wasted the time of the entire audience with "technical problems" as we oogled a 2-inch copy of "Behind The Green Door".

P.S. We didn't share the viewing with George!
