"CANE" IS NOT ABLE

Tried to watch the premier of CBS's "Cane" but found it to be ponderously boring, pretentious and derivative of other plots.

They say Cane wanted to be the Cuban-American Dallas but it came off as dark and humorless, more like Scarface or other crime dramas.

There were too many characters who the writers failed to give any depth. They were all like paper cut-outs and didn't have any feeling for any of them.

As to Jimmy Smits - he looked like he could wait to deliver his lines and go home. Even the great Hector Hector Elizondo seemed miscast.

Cane may hang on for a while because it is the PC thing for CBS to do, but it is a turkey even though it is served with rum [ from the sugar cane].

Moreover, it is up against the great and established "Boston Legal" which is always fun and interesting and well written.

Cane is none of those.

As I said in the headline, "Cane is not able."

You could have just said, "New England over Miami by several touchdowns".

I like Boston Legal because they always show video montage of Boston. And since nobody (like me) can afford to live there, that's the next best thing.

From everything I've read (including some poor reviews) it sounds like Cane is a diappointment, but you're right, lousy time slot. I also think making Boston Legal overlap the last 30 minutes of HOUSE M.D. was a mistake.

Has anyone noticed?

Jimmy Smits replaced David Caruso on NYPD Blue.
David Caruso is now on CBS' CSI:Miami His chracters last name is Caine.
Jimmy Smits is now on CBS with a show called 'Cane'.

Hmmmm.... I wonder if this is like the Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy and Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln? ::)

I disagree....

I believe "Cane" was quite watchable and entertaining. Also enjoyed the fact that it was seen with limited commercial interruptions. It looks promising in my mind.

At least it's not another crime drama franchise.....

I watched Cane and thought it was ok. I recorded the episode on my DVR and plan to watch it again this weekend since I was interrupted a few times while watching it last night. I think it has potential.

Most folks laughed off "Dallas" during its first few weeks, poking fun at the young man who portrayed Bobby who no longer had webbed hands and feet...and the former fall of a "Jeannie" portraying a tough texas oil man, with a "B" movie cowboy (Jim Davis)....and "Dallas" had nowhere near the the hype of this show....

For what it's worth - Cane is getting some good reviews from TV critics - all along the theme of - "yes, it's a soap, but it's well written, nicely shot, and entertaining."

Huh??? Cane had very little publicity. I read about it on yahoo.com's TV area a few hours before it came on. That's all I heard about it.

On the other hand, I remember Dallas having some publicity. It was the "big" soap opera for the nighttime audience (since most women were working by the late 70's).

I kinda dug it. It'll keep me watching CBS after "The Unit" airs.

Anyone taking bets on when "Cane" will be canceled? At the very least I bet it will be moved out of Tuesday night opposite Boston Legal and Shark.

I don't know; it seems like every other promo on CBS this summer has been for "Cane."
I'm sure the Eye Network hopes it'll be this generation's "Dallas," but there will be one
difference: "Dallas" helped put CBS back on top in the 1979-80 season, after three years
of ABC at number one ("60 Minutes" and "The Dukes Of Hazzard" were also instrumental
in the Eye Network's return to number one); now, CBS is already number one and I'm sure
"Cane" is expected to help keep it there.
