urban formats are failing and have been in this market and all over the us, do you think someone will pull the plug on one and go rock. when rock formats are failing and there is an overabundance of rock formats, just like the philly dial is over saturated with urban, everyone cries too many rock stations and the suits kill them off....why not with the failing urban stations...is the audiance that spendy that even a few listeners bring in the cash...

You know, you keep writing the same post over and over again with different words (and different ID's I might add). Why don't you get yourself a nice Sirius or XM receiver for Christmas. [EDIT]

[EDIT-inflammatory]

No kidding. Sounds like a typical rock format. Repeat after repeat after repeat.

Yes, the rock audience spends SO much that it's IMPOSSIBLE to understand why those suits who get paid millions of dollars to make these decisions can't see the mistake they are making in not flipping half their stations to rock! I mean, there's a reason when they build rock stations, they don't use steel but rather solid gold; they're worth that much in Philly!

Sheesh. Some people just don't get it.

He's right, though. There is definitely Urban and CHR overkill in this market, and so many programmers are pursuing the same demographic that it's inevitable some will lose out. WYSP was performing far better with the Active Rock format. Wired 96.5 is just a mess of a station, which sounds like a teenage girl's iPod. We have Q102 for that, so why cant they do something else? Rumba is pulling in nothing ratings as well - if they were smart, they would be playing more reggaeton than they are right now ... or better yet, giving the market a REAL Active or Alternative Rock station.

The typical rocker is not "repeat after repeat". It is if CBS or Clear Channel are in charge most of the time, but it doesn't always apply. Have you ever heard 102.7 WJSE (The Ace) in Atlantic City? Great variety, a little unfocused (the Classic Rock is unnecessary with TWO stations already playing it), but it still leans 80% Modern and plays a ton of tracks that you won't hear on the cookie-cutter rockers. A station like this combined with a good morning show would routinely pull in 4 shares at least. Of course, for whatever reason it seems that Men under 50 are not a desired demographic in Philly, or New Jersey for that matter. We need some new blood in both areas for sure.

It wasn't that long ago when WYSP, WMMR, Y100, and WDRE were all doing rock at the same time. WYSP was doing good, but WMMR was around a 3.0, Y100 was in the 2s, as was 'DRE. Not to mention that WMGK was doing classic hits and Alice 104.5 was Rock AC. What happened over time? WDRE went away, Y100 went away, Alice died, and WMGK shifted to classic rock. Then WYSP killed itself.

Just as the market was oversaturated with rock, it's now oversaturated with urban-based formats. Will the pendulum swing back eventually? Maybe. But with XM, Siruis, and IPods/mp3 players becoming more and more common, maybe it doesn't have to. Hell, we're already seeing CD's become extinct! Is AM/FM radio next? HD ain't gonna save it. Radio still doesn't realize that its not cool anymore. Sure, you need KYW for traffic and your one or two favorite FM stations for fun, but many people now have a hard time putting six decent stations on their car presets.

Don't like what you hear on the radio? Stop bitching about it on a message board and buy a $69 Ipod or a $39 XM Radio and don't worry about it anymore!

Scissors, why do you keep posting the same jargon on this board, you know these urban/dance, arm-chair PD's, will rip you every time. As a Rock embracer, I feel your pain and I know its gets frustrating at times, when you cannot hear your favorite brand of music on the dial, which is catering to one specific audiance. I was at a dining establishment yesterday on Ridge Pike and the owner had Philly 106.1 on, I asked him why this. He told me he could not find a suitable station on the dial that would fit his business, this was the only choice, although he hated it. He preferred some sort of Modern Adult format, like MAX he told me. BEN was too off the wall and played some urban cuts, and there was nothing else on the dial. He also told me there was a time he could cruise the dial and find many formats, his satellite dish is being installed today for his music. The point is, its unacceptable, when you cannot find a format in this large market to listen to. Oh!! BTW, Feliz Navid or whatever its called was being played on Philly 106.1, I guess they want to be all Hispanic, leave that tune to Rumba, why not Snoopys Christmas, not urban enough. Scissors, I have to disagree with your political views though :(

Thanks for the support, maybe I shouldn't post anymore, the people here are one sided bias, bottom line we do need and this market can support more rock stations. Niche formats. Heavy Metal, Punk, Industrial, Black Metal, Hair Metal, Hard Rock, Classic Hard Rock including Grunge and Punk. There is way too much Urban on this markets airwaves its just not fair. Hillary LOL, like your Snoopys christmas selection but how about the new Twisted Christmas CD from Twister Sister yeh I can hear it now on DAS, Wired, Q, Power, we dont want the one sided breed of listerner to go beserk....

Nowadays, when it comes to quibbling over radio formats, my eyes glaze over. Whatever brings in the cash to the stations is what matters. Eastpaste, I agree...when it comes to music discovery, one has Pandora, Rhapsody!, Yahoo Launchcast and their ilk.

you forgot 97.5 in that list
