Canton station reneges on prize

It's not HBC's fault that the concert was cancelled, but it should offer alternative prizes to all winners. I'm sure that they can create a suitable VIP experience for the grand prize winner.... Another concert? A sporting event? Maybe offer up a trip package that could easily be traded out? For the other winners, offer them theme park tickets, alternative concerts. This is easy and good PR. You never know who's going to get a diary. WHBC used to be the standard for quality broadcasting in Canton. Unfortunately, those days are long gone.

The PR is awful, and the station certainly could (and, at least PR-wide, should) have offered up some sort of alternative prize (and it could very easily be argued she is entitled to all the other stuff besides the concert --surely the hotel, limo, restaurant and Browns jerseys are still available). That said, as a radio fan rather than a pro like many of the others here, I ask: There must have been other canceled concerts and events; what have other stations done in the past?

The stations I've worked for have always one out of their way to accommodate the winner. In the old days if you screwed people over (or even if they just thought you did them wrong) eventually about 200 people would hear about it. Nowadays with social media that number could easily top 1000.

This makes WHBC-FM looks really bad. They should've consider an alternative prize in case of events like a cancellation happen. Now it doesn't appear that listener would ever tune in again.

Your comment about social media leads me to an interesting off-topic comment I heard. As you know, chef Paula Deen has been fired for alleged improper remarks. Well, the Food Network's Facebook page has been deluged with Paula fans trashing Food Network for their decision. The same happened with a company called Smithfield Farms. Deen supporters are out in force on social media trashing Smithfield Farms. What's interesting is we keep getting told about the power of social media, and no one wants to anger people who will take to social media. A media analyst said, "Who cares what a few thousand people on social media think. Social media isn't that important." NBC News took the comment and ran with it nationally. This is the first time I have heard "the power of social media" talked down. Anyone else ever hear social media described in less than glowing terms?

Isn't it a violation of FCC regulations (regulations which are actually enforced) to not hold a contest essentially as advertised? Yep, seeing the concert cancelled was beyond WHBC's control but simply waiving the 30-day restriction isn't anywhere near a "prize of equal value".

ONLY after it was made public. The lack of action prior to it appearing in the paper speaks volumes.

If a reporter calls you, do everything you can to say the right thing. Not “Well, OK, then I have another 30 or 40 people I also gave tickets to,” he responded. “I can’t create something

The response should have been: We are disappointed the concert was cancelled and are currently working on a substitute prize for those listeners who won tickets. We hope to notify them all within a few days.

BTW: Why did they give away 30 or 40 pairs (Thats a LOT!) to a concert for an artist they don't even play? No currents or gold? Please don't use the "larger than life" argument either. The concert was cancelled for low ticket sales. Selling less than 3,000 tickets is not exactly something I would call larger than life.

I see your point John. At least they didn't drag out not giving her anything for too long. I did notice All Access never published any updated quotes from the disappointed winner. I wonder if she'll even accept the new prize.

Bon Jovi remains a popular artist on stations like WHBC-FM. They play their music whether its old or new. Cleveland obviously loves the band too no matter what. It's based what their target audience likes.

Honestly people...Aren't we a bit Bon Jovi'ed out!!!! At least a Slim Whitman concert for Cleveland would have worked best..Oops! he just died...How about WHBC play 24 hours of Slim Whitman in honor of his memory ..As far as a Cleveland Browns backed concert..Get AC DC to kick off the Browns season...Sponsored by Pilot..Cleveland does still rock I hope..

Maybe concert and money-wise, but there's still an appetite for Bon Jovi on the radio. I personally think there's too much of his music heard on the local stations, but if its what the fans want, then so be it.

AC/DC aren't too bad of a choice, but I would've prefered to see a more diverse lineup that appeals to the population of the greater Cleveland area. I can guarantee that the concert didn't sell out, because not a lot of people would want to pay to see a band that doesn't appeal to a wide audience beyond those who love the band no matter what (not me).
