IMHO - There aren't a lot of people down there who care that much about talk radio. dont be fooled about ratings - WKKK, excuse me, WXTK carries the Sox and old men, and its the only talk game in town. Those who you might think would tune into another brand new talk format get their juice from the local NPR. XTK's morning show are equally hated as they are liked, but they've got the Sox-Rush-Howie, so boom, you get the 9.0 to 11.0 share every six-month book.
If a new station came into the market, it must consider one important fact that is never discussed on this board when talking about Cape Cod radio - there aren't enough advertisers and radio sales people to go around. Many stations are already struggling to maintain annual revenue streams and projections (see WMVY, WKPE) despite having strong loyal followings. As a result, their staffs are under paid, and over worked. Hence, the sale of Boch. Businesses are loyal to the sales people they've done business with for years, and thos same businesses aren't saavy enough to recognize other radio means to spread out their advertising dollars. its a sad but true fact of that market. the successful Cape Cod sales folk have been doing it for years in that market, their relationships are tight and reliable, and they use it as leverage to keep their jobs. as a result, whether they know it or not, new Cape radio sales folk are doomed from the start. And time always proves that.
with that in mind, a new station with a new format faces huge challenges to succeed and make a profit, more so than just simply saying, what kind of format does the Cape need? More than ever, the Cape market is about reactionary demos. and there just isnt enough people (225,000 to share with eleven local sticks and eight or nine 'over-the'bridge' signals) to develope brand new core followings to create loyal, retail buying audiences.
but, if given the vote, I'd buy both sticks and broadcast one format. or just keep the oldies format minus the jocks. The guess here is whoever buys it, they will automated it to keep costs down until a reliable revenue stream can be developed. And you can do it very easily by hiring $7 an hour board ops, pre-produced sweeps in and out of breaks and national programming.
