Just visited the relatives on Cape Cod (as I do often). Here's what I heard:

Cool 102 sounds better than ever in my opinion. Love the "Jack-esque" presentation while staying "Cool 102."

XTK - Still sounds great... but... I heard commercials clipping all the time. Must be a timing issue (satellite) but I never heard it before.

PIXY 103 - What will happen post-Stern??? I still heard a lot of the same imaging I've heard for YEARS on that station. Sounds burnt. The new night guy sounds like a breath of fresh "rock-air" even though he's a bit long-winded at times... but I fear they might be in a bit of trouble post-Stern. We'll see.

The Rose - Music is hit and miss. Very urban, but then some VERY non-urban (and non-CHR songs) mixed in randomly. I think it sounds good... but not great. Couple good jocks... couple poor. Imaging sounds good.

The Rocket - They need to step it up... NOW! Kind of a "yawn" station presented with the opportunity to sink the other rocker in the market. I think PIXY still has the advantage, but this is the Rocket's shot to take rock dominance on the Cape. Liven it up... and score!

WCOD - I heard it pre-Christmas flip. Music sounded pretty good, although not as upbeat and peppy and "happy" as COD had been last time I heard it. Middays and Afternoons sounded good... mornings sounded like a drill sgt. shouting at me. Station still shows promise... but not nearly as much as last time I heard it - slipping.

These are just my observations. Feel free to chime in. I understand if you disagree (or agree). We all have our opinions and I'd love to hear others'.

I'll give my two cents after listening when I was visiting at Thanksgiving ... because I'm a radio GEEK (and bored at work :) ).

Cool 102 - I think Cool is a pretty unique station that works for the Cape Cod market really well. It has a great mix of music.

PIXY 103 - I think the voice guy PIXY has is one of the best....so I don't mind the imaging that much. It will be interesting to see where the station goes from here post-Howard - but last time I heard it I thought it sounded good. It's the only rock station on the Cape, so I don't think it will run in to too much trouble after Stern.

The Rocket - I can only guess that whoever buys this station is going to do some major revamping. Talk about stale?!? I don't even consider it a real rock station ... it has steadily gone downhill since the mid 90s when it was Rock 104.7, and one of my favorite stations back then.

The Rose - The imaging has remained the same this year, which is a good thing. Their voice guy that Shane had brought in is really good and fun. Dan and Stephanie have the best morning show on the Cape... but, as for the quasi-urban format - it seems kind of unusual. I don't think a true urban CHR could work on Cape Cod - so I would make The Rose more of a traditional mainstream CHR (like it was before it flipped to "Cape Cod's hottest music") with a tight top 40 playlist. Then, as for WCOD..

WCOD - Qantum should go back and make 'COD the fun station it was before they took it over. Make it an AC, but keep in some of the 80s new wave tracks they used to play. The ratings were pretty high with this format in the past year or so, so why change it? I would remove some of the slow, sappy music that has found its way in to their playlist. They do have some good jocks - so use them to their full potential!

101.1/93.5 - What will Nassau do with these stations after Christmas? I think they were playing some really good 50s and 60s rock before they went to Christmas music...we'll see what happens...

Those are my observations ... of course, I just work for an online radio station now in Philadelphia - Y100Rocks.com - that is growing pretty quickly in an alt-rock-less city.

Happy Festivus, everyone,
Liam

It's not the size of the tower.....
It's how you use it.
