Cape Cod year in review 2009

Other Market boards are doing it and I know Cape Cod is small, but, was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the 2009 Cape Cod radio year. Good or Bad thoughts? Any thoughts?

Cape Cod radio has become too rock music oriented. There is the rock station Pixy 103 (102.9), Cool 102 (101.9) which is classic hits, 101.1 and 93.5 Frank FM which plays mostly rock hits, and 99.9 WQRC and 106.1 WCOD which play mostly pop rock. Also AAA rock on 92.7 WMVY. Putting oldies on 102.3 was a great idea but it still does not have a good signal in some areas of Cape Cod where 103.3 WODS can't be heard. I also loved the 96.3 The Rose, great mix of rhythmic Top 40 music, very little rock. It was the local station I listened to most when I travelled to Cape Cod.

If all of those stations are rock stations, got to mean that that is what the audience wants...

Since when did corporate radio care about what the audience wanted? Only a select few get a diary, so the ratings are based on the listening habits of only part of the whole audience. Corporate radio does not care what most listeners think, they only care about the almighty advertising dollar.

N1WVQ,
They are Hot AC but they play mostly pop rock.

If anything, the Cape has too many AC stations. One can consider the Frank Simulcast AC, although it would probably be best labeled Classic Hits. But remember, there is also WQRC, WCOD, Ocean 104, and Cool (but again, that might be labeled Classic Hits). These stations all have a Rock/AC flavor.

Don't the Cape's demographics skew older anyway? I thought that was a reason why they took the Rose off. What are WCOD-FM & WQRC playing in the rock category? When I heard them I heard mostly soccer-mom A.C. stuff.

I don't know if something changed down there, or what, because almost every station is targeting a younger audience than they were about 10 years ago. Back then, 103.9 WOCN was standards, and in between, 93.5/101.1 The Wave had a good run as oldies. Both WQRC and WCOD were AC, playing a good share of oldies as well, now they're both very much Hot AC.

I'm a big fan of Cool 102. They are classic hits, but they lean towards more classic rock than B101 does, and coverage is pretty good in eastern RI. It's sad that the best Classic Rock station in my car these days is my iPod. I'm not getting an HD radio so I can listen to bird fed Classic Rock on WWBB-HD2.

Musically Cool 102 has always had it over B101 because they're more focused. They have never been big on high profile personalities and there have been too many morning show changes though. Still, personality is all but gone outside of mornings on B101 anyway. B101 has never had the cojones to go outright classic rock, probably because of HJY's potential to be hurt by classic rock competition.

HJY already has competititon from 100.7 WZLX. I would love to hear B101 play more 70's and 80's soul music if anything. They are already too heavy on rock hits. I am just waiting for 103.3 WODS to go back to its original format of a nice mix of 60's to early 80's pop, soul, and disco. Kool 101 (100.9) in New London, CT also has a great mix of music. I listen to it when in southern RI.

Of all the stations I've worked for, Cool 102 is still my fave. Never felt more comfortable in any radio gig in my career.

Competititon?  Wow, typed too fast that time.  I am happy 103.3 WODS is now back to its original format, and I am sure some folks on the Cape also.  B101 did not change much musically while WODS was in its Christmas format, so it's back to 103.3 on the car radio for my favorite music.

Obviously, The Rose was a big loss. There certainly is a market on the Cape for a sports FM, however it was a shame it had to be at The Rose's expense. I was just in town once this year, so I can't really make any other well-informed critiques. My very subjective opinion from listening during my visit, however, is that - overall - Cape radio sounded a whole lot better 5-10 years ago then it does now. That's the trend in many markets, though. Just need to get more creative people in there to change it.

I agree profile,
I have vacationed at the Cape for many years and been through the constant format changes there.  It seems just when you find a radio station you like, it changes.  I've listened to 103.3 WODS mainly when down there, but there are spots along and south of Route 6 where it can't be heard, and Dunes 102.3 (Truro) is an alternative, but it's much weaker in Barnstable and Yarmouth because of stronger signals from nearby towers, plus it's mostly off the bird.  96.3 The Rose was a great station.  It was a great mix of dance, R&B, and hip-hop, with very little rock.  It was a great local alternative to the adult alternative rock often being played often on Hot AC 106.1 WCOD, which still mainly plays on that station today, and more recently on Hot AC 99.9 WQRC.  Cape Cod is now a land of mostly rock music radio.  Cool 102 (101.9), and 101.1 and 93.5 Frank FM are the other stations who favor rock, and then you have the actual rock station, Pixy 103 (102.9).  Would be nice if Fun 107 (107.1) could get the 93.5 signal in the eastern part of the Cape, so it could be heard clearly east of Barnstable.

I tried listening to WCOD-FM & WQRC. As someone who likes rock, I found listening to the aforementioned stations painful as they were mainly soccer-mom stuff. Not much in the way of rock.

WCIB/101.9 is a rocker, albeit classic rock. WMVY/92.7 is the Adult Album Alternative station. As for hearing rap, you might luck out with WKKL/90.7 although they're a block-formatted college station so there's rock in there.

I think sports on F.M. is a damn shame (unless it's a school station airing their own team) but apparently jocks can't figure out how to switch bands on their radios. F.M. sports radio sounds so hollow & lifeless.

Soccer mom, what other silly sports terms will people think of next? Baseball dads? Football brothers? Volleyball sisters? Golf grandpas? Gymnastics grandmas? ;D ;D ;D Anyway, it may not be hard rock, but it's a lot of softer Adult Alternative Rock hits, and definitely not a lot of dance music, which is why I find WCOD and WQRC hard to listen to, except when WCOD has the Dusty and Daphne show on Sunday night 5pm to 8pm, but big deal, 3 hours of dance music every week. Must be difficult for WCOD to even squeeze in that much dance music in a week. :p

They have NASCAR Dads, Hockey moms & dads & probably more than I know of. Anyway, when I first heard WMVY over 15 years ago I thought they WERE another A.C. station because it didn't sound like a rocker but no A.C. would play Warren Zevon's "Disorder In The House."

I am trying to figure where you're coming from. It seems you are a disgruntled dance fan radio listener & everything not urban or dance is rock. Is this correct?
