IT WAS just over a year ago that Madison native Chris Farley received one of the ultimate show business awards - a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard.

On Monday, another Los Angeles legend with a significant Madison connection gets a Hollywood Walk of Fame star - Bob Miller, a popular Madison TV sports anchor in the 1960s and '70s who three decades ago took a gamble and became the broadcaster for the poorly regarded Los Angeles franchise in the National Hockey League.

Thirty-three years later, Miller is still at it as the voice of the Los Angeles Kings, and how beloved he has become in southern California is evidenced by the awarding of the Hollywood Boulevard star, the 2,319th star on the Walk of Fame. ...

Hearn not only helped open the door for Miller but he also shared some of his wisdom.

Hearn told Miller, "Be yourself. You're not trying to be Chick Hearn, you're not trying to be Vin Scully, you're not trying to be anybody that you may have listened to growing up in Chicago...

"Just be yourself. Don't mimic other announcers. If they have a catch phrase, don't copy it. Just do the game in your own style. There are so many transplanted people from around the country here (L.A.), we're not homers, either.

"Yes, you want the Kings to win. Vin wants the Dodgers to win. I want the Lakers to win. But we're not cheerleaders here for the home team."

Miller, who's entering his 34th season with the Kings, carved out his own identity in the L.A. market, separate from that of Hearn and Scully.
