MAMA's 4th Bash Celebrates Live Music

The annual Michael St. John Lifetime Achievement Award went to legendary radio personality Jonathan W. Little, who was instrumental in the success of several local stations, including WZEE 104.1 FM ("Z104") and WMMM 105.5 ("Triple M") as well as a tireless promoter of local music.

"I'm a grateful person and I'm a blessed person," Little said. "I feel blessed by God to be put in a place where I can help people who are trying to realize their dreams."

Also receiving a standing ovation from the audience was MAMAs founder and organizer Rick Tvedt. Tvedt recently had to cease publication of his popular local music publication "Rick's Cafe," and he thanked his family for their help and support during the years when he was doing both the magazine and the award shows.

Overall, Saturday's event seemed a little more reserved and less raucous than previous years, possibly by design. Even the eminently quotable program director of WORT/FM 89.9, Sybil Augustine, kept it clean on stage, although she did make a glancing reference to the Iraq War and exhorted the audience to commit to going out and supporting live music.

"We don't want technology to isolate people, to keep people from experiencing music together," she said. "You have to be there."
