Independent musicians need to be as adept with a mouse as they are with a microphone.

That was the message from a panel of local music aficionados who gathered at the High Noon Saloon Monday night to discuss music promotion on the Internet. Madison Interactive, a group of Web professionals, sponsored the event, which drew about 20 musicians and music fans.

While the Web has given independent artists a slew of tools to reach potential fans more quickly and leveled the playing field so success does not necessarily require a major record deal, the panelists said musicians need to do more than just throw up a page on MySpace.

"You've got to think about how you promote your own art," said Roy Elkins, founder and CEO of Broadjam, a Madison company that hosts Web sites, facilitates download and merchandise sales and delivers music to radio stations for independent bands. More than 70,000 independent artists use the site. ...
