Their powerful harmonies used to float into the Texas farmhouse, carried on radio waves emanating from a station in Shreveport, La., about 100 miles away.

When a young Bill Malone heard the songs of the Bailes Brothers carried on the waves back in the late 1940s and 1950s, he heard kindred spirits.

"There's no group in country music that strikes me more as really being part of the culture I came from," says Malone, now a retired Tulane University professor, respected and Grammy-nominated country music historian and host of "Back to the Country" on WORT/FM 89.9 on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. "They're talking about things that my family would have known about, the values and frustrations and dreams." ...
